ASL Tour- Saurischian Dinosaurs and Akeley Hall of African Mammals

The American Museum of Natural History offers American Sign Language interpreted tours on varying topics, on selected Saturdays throughout the year. Experience informative, entertaining and inspiring presentations of permanent and special exhibitions for both deaf and hearing audiences with simultaneous signed and spoken tours. Programs with Sign Language are intended primarily for the Deaf community. ASL students may attend, but we do not sign attendance sheets.
These tours are both spoken and signed.

Saturday, January 24
We will marvel at the tallest freestanding dinosaur fossil anywhere in the world. We will learn about the mammals of Africa (including the endangered elephant) and some of the most dangerous animals on the continent. We will talk about the beautiful dioramas for which the museum is world famous. And we will visit the famous Tyrannosaurus Rex and the Apatosaurus, the biggest dinosaur.

Human Origins

Come and meet your family! Join us for a spotlight tour of the Hall of Human Origins and discover our ancient African roots. Explore how DNA and fossil studies reveal our beginnings nearly 7 million years ago. Meet Lucy and Turkana Boy, two of our early relatives. See how we’ve lived over the last two million years ago, our tools, our homes, our clothing. Witness our earliest migrations into the vast unknown world. It’s the exciting story of you and me and our place on the planet.

Earthquakes and Tsunami’s
Saturday, May 2
A tsunami devastated the Andaman Islands and the surrounding area on Boxing Day in 2004. More than 230,000 people were killed. What caused the tsunami? Could we have predicted it? Why did so many people die? What have we done since then to prepare for any recurrence? These and other questions will be addressed in a sign language tour of the Hall of Planet Earth. We will find out what causes earthquakes and tsunamis. We will also discuss other recent events such as the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011 and its effects on the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant.
