April 25, 2022 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

Free

Join a MAD educator and museum docents for an on-site tour of current exhibitions, specifically designed for visitors who are blind or have low vision.

Visitors will engage with the new exhibition Chris Schanck: Off-World  through verbal description, conversation, and sensory experiences. The tour will conclude with a visit to the studio of artist Rachelle Dang, who will share recent work made at MAD as part of her 2022 Artist Fellowship.

About the Artists:

During the past decade, Chris Schanck has emerged as a leading figure in the design world for his otherworldly fusion of sculpture and furniture. Skirting the line between refinement and camp, the strange, unfamiliar forms of Schanck’s chairs, sofas, lighting, mirrors, and more suggest coral reefs, extraterrestrial worlds, and artifacts from ancient civilizations, to name just a few of the designer’s inspirations. Each piece is meticulously handcrafted in Schanck’s Detroit-based studio, a community of artists, students, and Bangladeshi craftspeople who all make key contributions to the studio’s collective practice. Deftly melding innovative material experiments with an expressive yet rigorous refinement of form, Schanck’s elaborately carved, colorfully hued, and lustrous objects are contemporary talismans of stories from the past, present, and future.

Rachelle Dang combines sculpture and installation to comment on colonialism’s lasting impact on the natural environment. By bringing together historical material, botanical research, personal memories, and poetic allusion, she encourages audiences to deconstruct the past and reimagine the future. Dang was born in Honolulu and lives in Brooklyn.
