Style: Salsa
Dance Instructors: Talia Castro-Pozo and Adriel Flete
DJ: DJ Marysol
All summer long, ¡VAYA! honors NYC’s rich traditions of Latin dance and music with movement instruction and concerts tailored for dancers of all skill levels. Following a warm-up set of contemporary and classic salsa hits from WFDU’s DJ Mar Y Sol and some basic dance instructions from performer Talia Castro-Pozo, you’ll be ready to take the dance floor for a live concert from Brooklyn charanga quintet Los Hacheros, featuring specialists on flute, congas, tres, violin, and baby bass. Los Hacheros draws inspiration from the past but charts a path to a shining future for salsa dura, displaying equal mastery of both rustic Cuban rhythms and the contemporary sounds of modern salsa.
This evening features an adapted dance lesson from 5:15-6:00 pm, designed to be accessible for people with mobility concerns and will include seated instructors, followed by live music at 7:30pm. The lesson will be led in both English and Spanish by instructors Bethina Sayegh-Flores and Calvin A. Rollins from the Mark Morris Dance Group’s Dance for PD program, which specializes in creatively addressing balance, cognition, motor skills, and physical confidence through dance. All are welcome to participate and are encouraged to participate in the full evening of programming. Dance for PD instructors will also be offering seated versions of material shared at the public lesson and throughout the evening.
