On July 26, 1990 the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law to prohibit discrimination against individuals with disabilities, including in transportation. The New York Transit Museum and New York City Transit’s Office of Systemwide Accessibility are celebrating the 30th anniversary of this landmark civil rights legislation with two panel events exploring the ADA’s impact on New York City’s public transit system over the years. In each panel, we will use the Museum’s collection to illustrate some of the changes that have been made to improve accessibility throughout the system.

Subway and surface transit vehicles have done through many design changes over the years. Updates have occurred for a variety of reasons including accessibility, safety, comfort, and capacity. Join New York Transit Museum Education Staff Niko Goutakolis for a virtual walkthrough of some of the Museum’s iconic subway cars and buses for an inside look at our vintage fleet. Staff from New York City Transit will then showcase contemporary subway car and bus vehicle design and highlight recent innovations that have increased accessibility for riders.
