SUMMARY:Memory Connections
DESCRIPTION:Memory Connections is a free program for people living with dementia and their caregivers. On the second Thursday of every month\, trained teaching artists and special performers facilitate an online experience designed to promote engagement between participants and the art and cultures of the Himalayan region. \nIn addition to an in-depth look at two artworks from the Museum’s collection\, the December program will be the second and final session of a mini series in partnership with Stories in the Moment\, an evidence-informed program for people living with dementia\, as well as their care partners and friends. The program uses dance and movement as a form of storytelling and is built on the principle that all of us\, regardless of our modes of cognition\, have stories to tell and the means to tell them. Together\, we bring our minds and bodies together to build stories in the moment. All activities can be done seated or standing.

SUMMARY:Other-Worlding: Artist Talk by Emilie L. Gossiaux\, in Conversation with Georgina Kleege (Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:The Center for Disability Studies and Grey Art Gallery at NYU invite you to join Emilie L. Gossiaux for a virtual artist talk in advance of her debut museum solo exhibition\, “Other-Worlding”\, at the Queens Museum in New York City. Gossiaux will be in conversation with Georgina Kleege\, author of “More than Meets the Eye: What Blindness Brings to Art”. Gossiaux and Kleege will preview Gossiaux’s exhibit\, discuss her artistic practice\, and consider the ways a disabled artist’s experience can inform how museums provide access. \nEmilie L. Gossiaux is a multidisciplinary artist whose works center disability pride through her investigations of the complex relationships between humans and animals in the Anthropocene\, or the human-impacted world. Gossiaux’s work fosters imagination\, liberation\, and pleasure in opposition to the Anthropocene’s exploitative systems of capitalism and ableism. For her first museum solo exhibition\, Gossiaux will create a large-scale sculptural installation that both expands upon her deep and sincere relationship with her guide dog\, London\, and celebrates the white cane as a symbol of freedom. \nGeorgina Kleege is Professor Emeritus of English at UC Berkeley. She now lives in New York City. SUMMARY:Memory Connections Online
DESCRIPTION:Formerly known as Mindful Connections\, Memory Connections is the Rubin Museum’s long-running\, free access program that connects art and adults living with dementia. Join us online for an hour of close-looking and discussion led by Museum teachers and staff. \nOn September 14\, the program will explore the theme of Enlightened Teachers. Selections of Himalayan art from the Rubin’s collection will include Arhat Rahula (pictured above)\, the Buddha’s son and one of his 16 original disciples (called arhats)\, and Arhat Abheda\, the noble elder. Participants will also engage in a mindful movement workshop in partnership with GROOVE NYC\, exploring a variety of styles and genres that encourage you to feel good in your body while nurturing mind\, heart\, and soul. This workshop is accessible for all levels of mobility\, as participants will have the option to remain seated during the activity. \nPlease note: The new start time for this program is 11:00 AM. The Zoom link to connect to the program will be available at the bottom of your registration confirmation email.

SUMMARY:Textile Medley: Amanda Martínez and Danaleah Schoenfuss in conversation
DESCRIPTION:Join Intertwine Arts for a series of talks wherein we invite artists we admire to describe their textile influences. Each medley will involve sharing artwork as well as a discussion of the intersections and divergences of two artists and their craft and experiences. In this lunchtime series we’ll explore each artist’s creative process\, discuss how the two artists’ interweave\, and finally provide opportunity for discussion and questions. Register to receive a link to the Zoom meeting and a captioned recording of the program. \nSuggested Donation: $10 \n  \nAbout Amanda Martínez \nAmanda Martínez (b. 1988\, Greenville\, SC) completed her B.F.A. at Kansas City Art Institute. Recent solo exhibitions include “Labor”\, Pittsburgh\, PA (2023); “querencia”\, Hesse Flatow\, NY (2022) and “Architecture of Desire”\, as part of Aichi Triennale at Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art\, Nagoya\, Japan (2019). In 2020 she completed a public art commission at 125 Maiden Lane\, New York\, NY with Art In Buildings. Martínez has lately lectured as a visiting artist at University of Missouri\, School of Visual Arts\, George Washington University and Pratt Institute. In 2019 she curated “Objects of Desire” at Tiger Strikes Asteroid in Brooklyn\, NY and in 2021 contributed “Tamales as an open system” to the publication “You Stir the Pot: Recipes for Change” organized by Victoria Manganiello with support from Taiwan Craft Research Institute. She has work in the public collections of Francis J. Greenberger and Woodhull Hospital. Her first artist book “Lazos que unen” designed and hand bound by Sarah Smith and published by Stock Pile\, Brooklyn NY was released this year. Martínez has been awarded grants by the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation and the Autistic Women & Non-Binary Network along with past residencies in Wassaic\, NY\, Kansas City\, MO by the Charlotte Street Foundation and Truth or Consequences\, NM. \nRecent press for Martínez’s work includes Surface Magazine\, The New Yorker\, The New York Times and other outlets. Martínez is autistic and founded Autistic Artist Alliance in 2022\, an online community for autistic artists to challenge stereotypes and advocate for greater representation\, autonomy and dignity. The artist lives and works in Brooklyn\, NY. \nYou can see some of her amazing work by clicking here! \n  \nAbout Danaleah Schoenfuss \nDanaleah Schoenfuss is a lifelong crafter\, artist\, and arts worker\, who has explored a variety of mediums ranging from clay\, to wirework\, to weaving. Her work has been featured in two exhibitions\, including “Sensory Weaving” at Loop of the Loom and “Museum Workers Create” at the King Manor Museum. Her employment has ranged from The American Museum of Natural History to the New York Transit Museum to the Children’s Museum of Manhattan. Her work explores themes of playfulness\, subverting professionalism\, nostalgia\, neurodivergence\, and a strong DIY and found object sensibility.
