SUMMARY:Lincoln Center Presents: Virtual Exhibition Exploration - Syncopated Stages: Black Disruptions to the Great White Way
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a free virtual exploration of the newest exhibition at The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts: Syncopated Stages: Black Disruptions to the Great White Way.  \nDesigned for guests who are blind or have low vision\, this virtual event will be led by writer and audio describer Mel Watkins and joined by staff from the Library’s Theater Division. It will incorporate verbal description and discussion. \nAbout Syncopated Stages: Black Disruptions to the Great White Way:\nAlthough the common nickname for Broadway\, “the Great White Way\,” refers\, historically\, to its dazzling lights\, the phrase also suggests the ways in which many histories of New York theater center white artists. Black artists\, though\, have been important shapers of musical theater in the United States before the electric light was ever used on stage. In the early 20th century\, Black composers and writers created many popular musicals in New York that helped define the genre\, setting it apart from 19th-century traditions. \nNew forms of syncopation\, the disruption of the dominant rhythm\, and narratives composed and written by Black artists challenged the prevailing sounds and depictions of Black people on stage. These innovations were more than stylistic. They pushed back against exclusion and stereotype\, laying the groundwork for generations of Black artists whose contributions have reshaped Broadway. Syncopated Stages spotlights their work\, acknowledges the challenges they faced\, and celebrates the brilliance of what they made. We invite you to explore how Black artists transformed the New York stage and how their work still reverberates today. \nThis exhibition is organized by The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts and curated by playwright\, professor\, and scholar Michael Dinwiddie.

SUMMARY:Memory Connections
DESCRIPTION:Memory Connections is a free program for people living with dementia and their caregivers. On the second Thursday of every month\, trained teaching artists and special performers facilitate an online experience designed to promote engagement between participants and the art and cultures of the Himalayan region. \nIn addition to an in-depth look at two artworks from the Museum’s collection\, the December program will be the second and final session of a mini series in partnership with Stories in the Moment\, an evidence-informed program for people living with dementia\, as well as their care partners and friends. The program uses dance and movement as a form of storytelling and is built on the principle that all of us\, regardless of our modes of cognition\, have stories to tell and the means to tell them. Together\, we bring our minds and bodies together to build stories in the moment. All activities can be done seated or standing.

SUMMARY:Other-Worlding: Artist Talk by Emilie L. Gossiaux\, in Conversation with Georgina Kleege (Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:The Center for Disability Studies and Grey Art Gallery at NYU invite you to join Emilie L. Gossiaux for a virtual artist talk in advance of her debut museum solo exhibition\, “Other-Worlding”\, at the Queens Museum in New York City. Gossiaux will be in conversation with Georgina Kleege\, author of “More than Meets the Eye: What Blindness Brings to Art”. Gossiaux and Kleege will preview Gossiaux’s exhibit\, discuss her artistic practice\, and consider the ways a disabled artist’s experience can inform how museums provide access. \nEmilie L. Gossiaux is a multidisciplinary artist whose works center disability pride through her investigations of the complex relationships between humans and animals in the Anthropocene\, or the human-impacted world. Gossiaux’s work fosters imagination\, liberation\, and pleasure in opposition to the Anthropocene’s exploitative systems of capitalism and ableism. For her first museum solo exhibition\, Gossiaux will create a large-scale sculptural installation that both expands upon her deep and sincere relationship with her guide dog\, London\, and celebrates the white cane as a symbol of freedom. \nGeorgina Kleege is Professor Emeritus of English at UC Berkeley. She now lives in New York City. Her recent books include: Sight Unseen\, Blind Rage: Letters to Helen Keller\, and More than Meets the Eye: What Blindness Brings to Art. \nCo-sponsored by Proclaiming Disability Arts. \nVisitor Access and Registration \nASL and live captions will be provided. \nIf you require captioning and ASL simultaneously\, we recommend using a laptop or desktop computer\, and not a tablet or smartphone. \nPlease email accessibility needs as they relate to this event to msf440@nyu.edu.

SUMMARY:Memory Connections Online
DESCRIPTION:Formerly known as Mindful Connections\, Memory Connections is the Rubin Museum’s long-running\, free access program that connects art and adults living with dementia. Join us online for an hour of close-looking and discussion led by Museum teachers and staff. \nOn September 14\, the program will explore the theme of Enlightened Teachers. Selections of Himalayan art from the Rubin’s collection will include Arhat Rahula (pictured above)\, the Buddha’s son and one of his 16 original disciples (called arhats)\, and Arhat Abheda\, the noble elder. Participants will also engage in a mindful movement workshop in partnership with GROOVE NYC\, exploring a variety of styles and genres that encourage you to feel good in your body while nurturing mind\, heart\, and soul. This workshop is accessible for all levels of mobility\, as participants will have the option to remain seated during the activity. \nPlease note: The new start time for this program is 11:00 AM. The Zoom link to connect to the program will be available at the bottom of your registration confirmation email.
