DESCRIPTION:The ASL Tour is exclusive to visitors who are Deaf\, hard of hearing\, and their companions.  \n\nJoin us for an American Sign Language (ASL) tour of Made in America: The Industrial Photography of Christopher Payne.  \nThis exhibition brings together more than 70 large-format photographs captured by Christopher Payne over a decade-long photographic journey to learn more about the craft of both industrial and artisanal making in the United States. DESCRIPTION:Drop-in at the museum on the second Saturday of each month for hands-on family activities! This January\, join us for a special game day at the museum. \nDesign Your Own Board Game \n\nDesign your own board game: Create a story for your game and choose from a variety of materials to make your board.\nWrite challenge cards and craft your own player pieces out of clay. All materials provided.\n\nDesign Around Town \n\nAs a family\, explore design by playing a round of the museum’s own Design Around Town board game. Invite your family members to come up with creative solutions to design challenges at an ice cream shop\, a school\, a stadium\, and more.\nFamilies will bring home an exclusive-to-Cooper Hewitt Design Around Town board game set\, while supplies last.\n\nAccess Hour (11:00 am to 12:00 noon) \n\nThe first hour of family drop-ins are generally more quiet and less crowded.\nAdditional staff experienced in conducting accessible workshops will be present during this hour. Families will have access to sensory supports and adaptive materials. We’d love for you to join us for some structured fun!\nRead our Know Before You Go guide for step-by-step information about attending a family program.\n\nFamily drop-in activities are designed for youth ages 5–12 and their adult guardian/caregivers. DESCRIPTION:Join us for an afternoon of community\, crafting\, and conversation inspired by disability activist\, writer\, and visionary leader\, Alice Wong.  \nThis gathering invites participants to collaboratively reflect on Wong’s transformative impact on inclusive design and the participation of those with lived experience in accessible design strategies. Learn about Wong’s influence on design thinking through community discussion and shared reflection. Engage in drop-in crafting and art-making activities inspired by her advocacy and creativity. Whether you are familiar with her work or just learning about her contributions\, this event offers space for connection\, creativity\, and care.   \nThrough her advocacy\, storytelling\, and leadership\, Wong transformed conversations around disability justice\, representation\, and access. Wong (1974–2025) was a groundbreaking disability activist\, writer\, and founder of the Disability Visibility Project\, among a multitude of other cross-disciplinary projects dedicated to amplifying disabled voices. Her work revolutionized disability representation within inclusive design and community advocacy spaces.   \n\nAccessibility and What to Expect \n\nFormat: Informal discussion and reflection with prompts. Drawing and hands-on crafting instructions will be available and all materials will be provided. No drawing or design experience is required. You can drop in at any time and stay as long as you like. \n\n\nAbout this space: This program will take place in person in the first-floor galleries at Cooper Hewitt (Entry through garden gates on 90th Street\, between Fifth and Madison Avenues). Take your design home and showcase your collection! \nDrop in anytime from 9:00am-10:30am for a small-group\, sensory-friendly experience intended for neurodivergent children and teens!  \nABOUT THE PROGRAM\nProgram Length: No set time\, enjoy as much time as you need. The museum opens to the public at 10am; you do not need to leave once the museum opens.\nInteractivity Level: High  \nMorning at the Museum is a free\, sensory-friendly program for neurodivergent children and teens and their families in which they can visit Cooper Hewitt prior to opening on designated Saturday mornings. SUMMARY:Verbal Description Tour & Tactile Drawing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a tour of Cooper Hewitt’s current exhibition\, Give Me A Sign: The Language of Symbols\, co-led by curator Emily Orr and Accessibility & Inclusion Manager Kirsten Sweeney in collaboration with the NYPL Heiskell Braille & Talking Book Library. Together\, we will examine the fascinating history behind many of the symbols that instruct\, protect\, entertain\, empower\, and connect people\, and discuss the ways visual and non-visual symbols show up in our daily lives. Rich verbal descriptions and tactile recreations of symbols will accompany the tour.  \nAfter the tour\, join us for an interactive drawing workshop. Using Sensational Blackboards for tactile drawing\, we will take what we’ve learned about the building blocks of symbols to design our own. No previous experience with tactile drawing is required.  \nWhen: Saturday\, August 12\, 2:00– 4:00 p.m. ET\nWhere: Cooper Hewitt\, 2 E 91st St\nParticipation Level: High – Participants will take a tour of the galleries and then design their own symbols in an interactive workshop.  \nRegister here\, or send an email with your name to CHAccess@si.edu or call Kirsten Sweeney at 212.849.8384.  \nAccessibility:  \n\nLocation: The tour will take place in Cooper Hewitt’s first-floor galleries. The tour will last about an hour\, and portable stools are available for participants who cannot stand for long periods of time.
