SUMMARY:Robert Glasper + Alain Pérez
DESCRIPTION:This can’t-miss opening night of Lincoln Center’s Summer for the City features two performances from major contemporary superstars\, offering a vision of a spectacularly full musical future defined by genius and limitless possibility. Over an already storied 20-year career\, the multiple GRAMMY Award-winning producer\, composer\, pianist\, and culture creator Robert Glasper has seamlessly reintegrated the intersecting spirits of modern jazz\, R&B\, and Hip-Hop. Glasper’s Black Radio album project ushered in a generation of listeners for whom genre means far less than musicality. Next to hit the stage is Cuban bassist and polymath musician Alain Pérez\, who joins us as part of his Bingo summer tour. The Latin GRAMMY Award winner\, Alain Pérez & La Orquesta\, has earned an international reputation as a creative innovator whose Latin roots provide a foundation for bold expression and expansion.

SUMMARY:Steel Pulse

Hailing from Birmingham\, England\, the group’s 40-year revolutionary journey of clever orchestration and potent instrumental melody continues to define the magnificent power and beauty of reggae music. Their continually electrifying live performances on stages around the globe have kept Steel Pulse’s legacy alive for the next generation of artists and audiences. As part of Lincoln Center’s celebration of Jamaica Day\, a jubilation of the island nation’s culture and history\, Steel Pulse will perform a full-length concert\, featuring founding members David Hinds and Selwyn Brown and tracks from the band’s formidable catalog. \nRun time: approximately 1 hour 45 minutes \nIf you have any questions about this event\, please contact Guest Experience at 212-875-5456 or guestexperience@lincolncenter.org. \nLive captioning available on personal devices by scanning a QR code.

SUMMARY:Once on This Island: In American Sign Language by Deaf Broadway
DESCRIPTION:In just four short years\, Deaf Broadway has become synonymous with authentically Deaf musical theater. Founded during the pandemic in response to artistic director Garrett Zuercher’s experience as a profoundly Deaf person frustrated with the state of access to performances of lyrically complex musicals\, which often watered down the nuances of the original language and intentions. Taking up the gauntlet\, he and his team began producing American Sign Language interfaces to pre-existing recordings of popular musicals\, simultaneously presenting the original music alongside a live cast of trained Deaf actors\, all performing their individual parts in American Sign Language. This live staging of the beloved Broadway musical by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty offers a more fully equitable shared evening for hearing and Deaf audiences alike\, with a full Deaf Broadway cast interpreting the music in person. Their latest performance was a smash staging of Jonathan Larson’s RENT this spring as part of Lincoln Center’s American Songbook series. \nIf you have any questions about this event\, please contact Guest Experience at 212-875-5456 or guestexperience@lincolncenter.org. \n\n\n\nPerformance in American Sign Language and Open Captioning available.

SUMMARY:The Ritual of Breath Is the Rite to Resist
DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with Hopkins Center for the Arts at Dartmouth \nThe Ritual of Breath is a transdisciplinary opera and creative act of resistance. Born from the vibrant collaboration between composer Jonathan Berger\, visual artist Enrico Riley and poet/librettist Vievee Francis\, the work responds to the murder of Eric Garner and the ongoing theft of Black life at the hands of the State. Music\, text\, projected visuals and movement interweave in a story centered on Garner’s daughter\, Erica. Uplifted by a 75-person choir of singers\, the project gathers us together as co-conspirers—to breathe and keep breathing any way we can. \nThe Ritual of Breath is more than an opera. It is an offering for the city\, coinciding with the 10-year commemoration of Garner’s death. Through community partnerships from Harlem to Staten Island\, we invite you to join in community activations and collective rituals of healing. Learn more here » \nThe work is directed by Niegel Smith\, the pioneering theater artist and artistic director of The Flea; conducted by American Prize-winning Kamna Gupta; with choreography by founder of Urban Bush Women Jawole Willa Jo Zollar. The Ritual of Breath is grounded in work by the creative team with activist Dr. Shamell Bell and a group of mothers who have lost their children to state-sanctioned violence\, including Gwen Carr\, Eric Garner’s mother. \nCommissioned and produced by Hopkins Center for the Arts at Dartmouth. Co-commissioned by Stanford Live. \nIf you have any questions about this event\, please contact Guest Experience at 212-875-5456 or guestexperience@lincolncenter.org. \nCommunity activations beginning at 7:30 pm; more details coming soon. \nWill include American Sign Language interpretation and Open Captioning.

SUMMARY:Brasil Summerfest With Gilsons
DESCRIPTION:Presented in association with Brasil Summerfest \nFor the past 13 years\, Brasil Summerfest has brought the music and flavor of Brazil to New York City with an array of audio\, arts\, and special events that highlight the beauty and diversity of South America’s biggest exporter of cultural excellence. Brazilian Music Award-winning trio Gilsons are a family band of the highest pedigree. Francisco\, João\, and José Gil are respectively the sons and grandsons of the legendary Gilberto Gil. The band blends pop rock\, samba\, rap and Bahian rhythms\, but draws particular inspiration from MPB\, Gilberto’s chief métier. Following a strong run of singles\, including the hits “Várias Queixas\,” and “Devagarinho”\, the band released their debut album\, Pra Gente Acordar\, which was subsequently nominated for the Latin GRAMMY for Best Contemporary Pop Album in Portuguese. The trio has participated in major festivals throughout Brasil\, including Lollapalooza and Rock in Rio\, but this performance represents both their U.S. and Lincoln Center debut. \nRun time: approximately 2 hours \nIf you have any questions about this event\, please contact Guest Experience at 212-875-5456 or guestexperience@lincolncenter.org. \nLive captioning available on personal devices by scanning a QR code

SUMMARY:Musical Theater Storytime with Mama Foundation for the Arts
DESCRIPTION:Presented in collaboration with The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts \nSince 1983\, Vy Higginsen’s musical\, Mama\, I Want To Sing! has entertained audiences around the world with its joyful celebration of gospel music and the people who make it. The success of the musical led to the creation of Mama Foundation for the Arts\, a Harlem-based non-profit organization with a two-decade history of presenting\, preserving\, and promoting African American arts and inspiring generations of musical leaders. In this storytime aimed at kids 0-6\, Mama Foundation offers a sample of this learning experience. Kids will learn songs and practice singing together and individually. \nLincoln Center celebrates summer in New York City as our free Storytime series returns to The Garden at Damrosch Park—and this year due to popular demand\, we have scheduled a second event every Wednesday! Curated by The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts\, this Storytime event presents a children’s book reading with live musical theater incorporated to keep kids of all ages enraptured and engaged! \nIf you have any questions about this event\, please contact Guest Experience at 212-875-5456 or guestexperience@lincolncenter.org. \nThe event at 1:00 pm will include American Sign Language interpretation

SUMMARY:Toshi Reagon's Songs of the Living: Freedom Songs
DESCRIPTION:Over the past several years\, the ever-expansive singer-songwriter Toshi Reagon has explored questions of fellowship and activism with Lincoln Center programs that have united professional singers with audience members through shared performance\, most notably in her innovative and participatory opera based on the work of author Octavia Butler\, The Parable of the Sower. Reagon’s program this year is a continuation of her Songs of the Living Community Choir project\, and the Parable Path. This iteration of Songs of the Living is centered on freedom songs: drawing from 200 years of Black Music in collaboration with music across the global African Diaspora. This Juneteenth concert will be rooted in music Toshi learned as a child growing up during the Southern Freedom Movement which expanded into the 20th century American Civil Rights Movement and other revolutions in international human history. Reagon’s multitudinous and intergenerational choir is supported by her band BIGLovely and joined by an array of special guests to be announced. It is a collaborative concert that first and foremost acknowledges the ongoing fight for justice and equality that is our necessary struggle and birthright. \nIf you have any questions about this event\, please contact Guest Experience at 212-875-5456 or guestexperience@lincolncenter.org. \n\n\n\nWill include American Sign Language interpretation and open captioning.

SUMMARY:Black Swan
DESCRIPTION:Natalie Portman gives a virtuosic\, Oscar-winning turn as Nina Sayers\, a sheltered but intensely driven young dancer with a ballet company in New York City\, on the verge of getting her big break: a chance to perform the dual role of the Black and White Swans in the company’s production of Swan Lake. When the talented\, worldly Lily (Mila Kunis) joins the company\, Nina fears that her own claim to the role could be in jeopardy\, and begins to experience hallucinations\, buckling under the compounding pressures and expectations imposed by the dance company’s icy\, egomaniacal artistic director (Vincent Cassel); her mother (Barbara Hershey)\, herself a former ballerina\, with whom Nina shares a claustrophobic city apartment; and her embittered predecessor\, the company’s recently ousted prima ballerina (Winona Ryder). Leaning into the expressionistic\, velvety chiaroscuro of Matthew Libatique’s 16mm cinematography\, director Darren Aronofsky conjures an almost uncanny\, starkly forbidding vision of Manhattan\, hinting that the punishing\, cutthroat conditions that animate Nina’s insular professional milieu are of a piece\, perhaps\, with the world that extends beyond the theater walls. \nIf you have any questions about this event\, please contact Guest Experience at 212-875-5456 or guestexperience@lincolncenter.org. \n\nAudio Description available\, providing live description for guests who are blind or have low vision through receivers and headsets
