SUMMARY:Brooklyn Talks: Contemporary Artists in Practice
DESCRIPTION:7–9 pm \nIris and B. Gerald Cantor Auditorium\, 3rd Floor \n\nGet tickets\nThis program will include ASL interpretation. For access needs\, email us at access@brooklynmuseum.org.\nFour contemporary artists\, whose works were recently added to the collection\, explore their practice in rapid-fire conversations with curators. \nDare Turner\, Curator of Indigenous Art\, begins the evening by moderating a discussion with Hayden Haynes and Samantha Jacobs about their collaborations. Jacobs is a Seneca artist of the Turtle Clan from the Cattaraugus Territory\, who is known for her beaded moccasins\, quillwork\, moose embroidery\, and caribou hair tufting. A citizen of the Seneca Nation and Deer Clan\, Haynes creates works of photography\, found objects\, and antler carvings that are dedicated to healing—an expression of Hodinöhsö:ni’ life today. \nPauline Vermare\, Phillip and Edith Leonian Curator of Photography\, speaks with photographer and director Diana Markosian\, whose approach to documentary storytelling expands the genre’s boundaries. \nCarmen Hermo\, former Associate Curator of the Center for Feminist Art\, speaks with Melissa Joseph\, whose work is on view in The Brooklyn Artists Exhibition. Through artwork that pairs needle felting and found objects\, Joseph considers themes of memory\, family history\, and the politics of how people occupy space. \nSchedule \n\n7–7:30 pm Hayden Haynes\, Samantha Jacobs\, and Dare Turner\n7:30–8 pm Diana Markosian and Pauline Vermare\n8–8:30 pm Melissa Joseph and Carmen Hermo\n\nTickets are $20 and include after-hours access to Toward Joy: New Frameworks for American Art and The Brooklyn Artists Exhibition. SUMMARY:Brooklyn Talks: Paola Mendoza and Paola Ramos
DESCRIPTION:7–9 pm \nIris and B. Gerald Cantor Auditorium\, 3rd Floor \n\nGet tickets\nJoin journalist Paola Ramos and filmmaker Paola Mendoza for a thought-provoking conversation on two of the nation’s most important and misunderstood communities: Latinos and immigrants. From the rise of authoritarian forces and anti-immigrant rhetoric to the spread of misinformation\, Ramos and Mendoza will touch on pressing issues facing American political and cultural life. In tandem with the release of their books SOLIS and Defectors\, the two authors reflect on how Latino and immigrant communities shape the nation. Together they will explore storytelling’s power to help us understand these issues and to inspire change. \nSOLIS\, Mendoza’s dystopian YA novel\, tells the tale of undocumented immigrants subjected to labor camps and a teen-led contingent that plots to liberate its community. Ramos’s new nonfiction book\, Defectors\, unravels the assumption that Democrats can rely on a monolithic Latino vote by sharing stories of Latino voters who have aligned with the conservative movement. \nTickets are $10 ($6 for Members) and include after-hours admission to the American Art galleries. Not a Member? Join today! Add copies of SOLIS and Defectors at checkout. \nThis program will include ASL interpretation. For visitors with disabilities or accessibility needs\, email access@brooklynmuseum.org. \n

Rubin Pavilion\, 1st Floor \n\nRegister for free\n  \nIn honor of Earth Day\, join Rachel Cargle\, Céline Semaan\, and Jenn Tardif for a conversation that will expand on the concept of climate rage—a cousin of climate grief\, or the experience of anxiety and mourning over ecological loss. Together\, they discuss how anger can be alchemized into action within the climate justice movement\, as well as intertwining struggles for liberation. \nCargle is a writer\, entrepreneur\, and founder of the Loveland Foundation\, a nonprofit that offers free therapy to Black women and girls. Semaan is cofounder and CEO of Slow Factory\, a nonprofit working at the intersection of climate justice and human rights\, using media justice\, the arts\, regenerative system design\, and science and technology to address and redesign systems of oppression. Tardif is a meditation teacher\, aromatherapist\, and founder of 3rd Ritual\, a company that creates modern tools for ancient mindfulness techniques. \nThe conversation is followed by a teach-in and distribution of free plants with Herban Cura\, a collective that shares knowledge of plants and herbal remedies to build community resilience as part of its Plants to the People campaign. \nFree; registration is required. Seating is first come\, first served. \nThis program will include ASL interpretation. For access needs\, email us at access@brooklynmuseum.org. \n
