DESCRIPTION:Members of the low-vision and blind community are invited to this exciting\, in-person Vibrant Verbal Description Tour at Poster House. This after-hours event will provide exclusive access to the museum’s hit exhibition\, Made in Japan: 20th-Century Poster Art. \nThe tour will be led by Chief Curator Angelina Lippert\, who has led our virtual description tours for the past two years. This intimate experience will allow guests to get up close with all the posters described\, as well as provide additional tactile objects to help illuminate the art. Light refreshments will be provided. \nWhile everyone is welcome\, Poster House offers Vibrant Verbal Description Tours specifically for community members who are blind\, have low vision\, or who benefit from verbal descriptions. \nMasks are encouraged during this event and are available free of charge at the museum. Join us in June to explore the current exhibition Young Picasso in Paris. \nAt only nineteen years old\, a young Pablo Picasso first arrived in Paris on a whirlwind two-month stay\, returning the following year to experience galleries\, cafés\, and dance halls that would inspire and highlight his paintings and drawings from 1900-1901. This intimate exhibition showcases Picasso’s artistic development reflected in his character studies\, defining works like Le Moulin de la Galette\, and several self-portraits. \nIn conjunction with the fiftieth anniversary of Picasso’s death\, join us in exploring works made during a formative period of his life. This month’s Mind’s Eye programming will be led by educator Ellen Edelman through verbal description and conversation. Attend themed talks\, listen to live jazz in our outdoor café\, and try your hand at figure drawing with drag artist Gloria Swansong. All night long\, escape the heat with after-hours access to our galleries and reading room—including a special new pastel mural by artist Nicolas Party. \nComplimentary refreshments from The SisterYard will be provided. Gallery talks will explore pastels by Nicolas Party and Rosalba Carriera\, Pride-themed selections from the Frick Art Reference Library\, and J. M. W. Turner’s Harbor of Dieppe. SUMMARY:Waves of Wonder: A Play About Water and our World
DESCRIPTION:Set sail with Emit Theatre and a brand-new TYA production\, Waves of Wonder: A Play About Water and Our World. \nFree public performances will take place on Saturday\, June 24 at Carl Schurz Park (Peter Pan Circle near 87th St) and Sunday\, June 25 at bkONE’s Tom Kane Theatre (51 35th Street Bldg. 5\, Brooklyn\, off the D\, N and R trains). A pre-show craft will begin at 1 pm with a 1:30 pm showtime. In line with Emit’s mission to make theatre accessible to the community\, performances are free/by donation with a suggested donation of $15. \nWaves of Wonder is an interactive play for young audiences that takes students on a journey to help save their town’s waterfront from harmful development. Along the way\, they encounter mythical creatures who teach them about the importance of conservation and community. Devised by the company\, it features traditional Afro-Caribbean\, Nigerian\, Chinese\, Scottish\, and Gullah mythology. \nBoth show locations are ADA-accessible. Additional accessibility accommodations will include handheld fans\, shade umbrellas\, fidget spinners\, noise-canceling headphones\, and ice packs. Crafted for ages 3-8. SUMMARY:Textile Medley: Amanda Martínez and Danaleah Schoenfuss in conversation
DESCRIPTION:Join Intertwine Arts for a series of talks wherein we invite artists we admire to describe their textile influences. Each medley will involve sharing artwork as well as a discussion of the intersections and divergences of two artists and their craft and experiences. In this lunchtime series we’ll explore each artist’s creative process\, discuss how the two artists’ interweave\, and finally provide opportunity for discussion and questions. Register to receive a link to the Zoom meeting and a captioned recording of the program. \nSuggested Donation: $10 \n  \nAbout Amanda Martínez \nAmanda Martínez (b. 1988\, Greenville\, SC) completed her B.F.A. at Kansas City Art Institute. Recent solo exhibitions include “Labor”\, Pittsburgh\, PA (2023); “querencia”\, Hesse Flatow\, NY (2022) and “Architecture of Desire”\, as part of Aichi Triennale at Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art\, Nagoya\, Japan (2019). In 2020 she completed a public art commission at 125 Maiden Lane\, New York\, NY with Art In Buildings. Martínez has lately lectured as a visiting artist at University of Missouri\, School of Visual Arts\, George Washington University and Pratt Institute. In 2019 she curated “Objects of Desire” at Tiger Strikes Asteroid in Brooklyn\, NY and in 2021 contributed “Tamales as an open system” to the publication “You Stir the Pot: Recipes for Change” organized by Victoria Manganiello with support from Taiwan Craft Research Institute. She has work in the public collections of Francis J. Greenberger and Woodhull Hospital. Her first artist book “Lazos que unen” designed and hand bound by Sarah Smith and published by Stock Pile\, Brooklyn NY was released this year. Martínez has been awarded grants by the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation and the Autistic Women & Non-Binary Network along with past residencies in Wassaic\, NY\, Kansas City\, MO by the Charlotte Street Foundation and Truth or Consequences\, NM. \nRecent press for Martínez’s work includes Surface Magazine\, The New Yorker\, The New York Times and other outlets. Martínez is autistic and founded Autistic Artist Alliance in 2022\, an online community for autistic artists to challenge stereotypes and advocate for greater representation\, autonomy and dignity. The artist lives and works in Brooklyn\, NY. \nYou can see some of her amazing work by clicking here! \n  \nAbout Danaleah Schoenfuss \nDanaleah Schoenfuss is a lifelong crafter\, artist\, and arts worker\, who has explored a variety of mediums ranging from clay\, to wirework\, to weaving. Her work has been featured in two exhibitions\, including “Sensory Weaving” at Loop of the Loom and “Museum Workers Create” at the King Manor Museum. Her employment has ranged from The American Museum of Natural History to the New York Transit Museum to the Children’s Museum of Manhattan. Her work explores themes of playfulness\, subverting professionalism\, nostalgia\, neurodivergence\, and a strong DIY and found object sensibility.
