DESCRIPTION:Join us for a virtual tour of Cooper Hewitt’s current exhibition\, Give Me A Sign: The Language of Symbols\, co-led by curator Emily Orr and Accessibility & Inclusion Manager Kirsten Sweeney. This exhibition marks the 50th anniversary of Henry Dreyfuss’s Symbol Sourcebook: An Authoritative Guide to International Graphic Symbols (1972)\, a manual that compiled and categorized thousands of symbols in use internationally and helped to elevate the importance of symbols and increase their number in our world. Together\, we will examine the fascinating history behind many of the symbols that instruct\, protect\, entertain\, empower\, and connect people\, and discuss the ways visual and non-visual symbols show up in our daily lives. On August 9\, Lincoln Center continues its celebration of 50 years of Hip-Hop with J.PERIOD Live Mixtape: Gods & Kings Edition\, a commemoration of 2023’s golden anniversary with performances from two of New York’s most legendary emcees\, Rakim and Big Daddy Kane\, along with more special surprise guests.  \n  \nAudio Description\n \nEntrance to Damrosch Park is located on the north side of West 62nd Street\, between Columbus and Amsterdam\, located on an accessible route.\nEvent entry is available through Fast Track or General Admission. Rich verbal descriptions and tactile recreations of symbols will accompany the tour.  \nAfter the tour\, join us for an interactive drawing workshop. Using Sensational Blackboards for tactile drawing\, we will take what we’ve learned about the building blocks of symbols to design our own. DESCRIPTION:2–4 pm \nSteinberg Family Sculpture Garden\, 1st Floor (rain location: Beaux-Arts Court) \n\nRegister for free\nSwing by the Museum’s backyard Sculpture Garden for performances by some of the city’s best musicians\, and enjoy a range of creative styles incorporating blues\, jazz\, and international sounds. Presented in partnership with Jazz Foundation of America. \nIn August\, catch St. Louis–born drummer\, percussionist\, keyboardist\, composer\, arranger\, bandleader\, and educator Ronnie Burrage\, who draws from jazz\, funk\, and soul. Burrage performed with Duke Ellington at the age of nine and later collaborated with many acts that informed his style\, including the Oliver Sain Band\, Defunkt\, and the Burrage Band. His current group\, Holographic Principle\, performs Burrage’s own compositions and imaginatively reworked standards. \nThis program is free; registration is encouraged.
