DESCRIPTION:The Guggenheim Museum welcomes visitors from the D/deaf community for an in-person American Sign Language (ASL) tour on Sunday\, September 10\, from 6:30–8:30 pm. Join us at the museum to explore the exhibitions Gego: Measuring Infinity and Sarah Sze: Timelapse during their final hours on view. \nThis after-hours program is led by educator Joyce Hom\, and is free for participants. We’ll begin with a tour in the galleries followed by a light reception and art-making activities in our Education Center. \nDesigned for the D/deaf community\, the tour is in ASL only without voice interpretation. Due to limited capacity\, we are not able to accommodate ASL students at this time. \nSpace is limited\, please RSVP at least three days before the program. His passion for gardens inspired him to create new works—in gold leaf and stainless steel—for three iconic outdoor spaces.   \n\n Meet the artist\, who will discuss the Gold Rose sculpture\, his background\, and his inspirations. \n\n\nHear from representatives of exhibit sponsor DIOR and learn about their company’s investment in the flower fields of France. Plus\, try DIOR’s new scent diffusers.  \n\n\nTour with our Garden Guides\, who are trained to verbally describe the history\, structure\, and horticultural display of the Fragrance Garden and engage visitors with plant materials to touch and smell. \n\n The tour is free\, but space is limited\, so registration is required. Presented in partnership with Jazz Foundation of America. \nIn August\, catch St. Louis–born drummer\, percussionist\, keyboardist\, composer\, arranger\, bandleader\, and educator Ronnie Burrage\, who draws from jazz\, funk\, and soul. Burrage performed with Duke Ellington at the age of nine and later collaborated with many acts that informed his style\, including the Oliver Sain Band\, Defunkt\, and the Burrage Band. His current group\, Holographic Principle\, performs Burrage’s own compositions and imaginatively reworked standards. \nThis program is free; registration is encouraged. SUMMARY:Verbal Description Tour & Tactile Drawing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a tour of Cooper Hewitt’s current exhibition\, Give Me A Sign: The Language of Symbols\, co-led by curator Emily Orr and Accessibility & Inclusion Manager Kirsten Sweeney in collaboration with the NYPL Heiskell Braille & Talking Book Library. Together\, we will examine the fascinating history behind many of the symbols that instruct\, protect\, entertain\, empower\, and connect people\, and discuss the ways visual and non-visual symbols show up in our daily lives. Rich verbal descriptions and tactile recreations of symbols will accompany the tour.  \nAfter the tour\, join us for an interactive drawing workshop. Using Sensational Blackboards for tactile drawing\, we will take what we’ve learned about the building blocks of symbols to design our own.
