SUMMARY:Book club with Joan: Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker
DESCRIPTION:Book: Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker \nChava is a golem\, a creature made of clay\, brought to life by a disgraced rabbi who dabbles in dark Kabbalistic magic\, created to be the wife of a man who dies at sea on the voyage from Poland. Chava is unmoored and adrift as the ship arrives in New York harbor in 1899. Ahmad is a jinni\, a being of fire born in the ancient Syrian desert\, trapped in an old copper flask\, and released in New York City\, though still not entirely free. \nAhmad and Chava become unlikely friends and soul mates with a mystical connection. Marvelous and compulsively readable\, Helene Wecker’s debut novel The Golem and the Jinni weaves strands of Yiddish and Middle Eastern literature\, historical fiction and magical fable\, into a wondrously inventive and unforgettable tale. \nThis book is available from NLS as DB76801 for audio. Download it through BARD at nlsbard.loc.gov\, the BARD Mobile app\, or request them from your local NLS library. This book is also available in digital braille if you are a Bookshare member\, and we can emboss it for you if you would like it in hard copy braille.    \nTo register\, or if you have any access needs or require ASL interpretation\, contact us at register@jbilibrary.org or 646-616-3929.

SUMMARY:Memoir Series Part Two: “My Childhood in Pieces” with Edward Hirsch
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Wednesday\, June 11 at 4:30pm EST for part two of JBI Library’s memoir series\, as acclaimed poet Edward Hirsch reads excerpts from his newly released memoir “My Childhood in Pieces”\, followed by a discussion of the writing process\, the peculiarities of memoir writing\, and questions from the audience. In “My Childhood in Pieces”\, dark comic microbursts of prose deliver a whole childhood\, at the hands of an aspiring middle-class Jewish family whose hard-boiled American values and wit were the forge of a poet’s coming-of-age.  \nRegister with Zoom at https://jbilibrary-org.zoom.us/meeting/register/0apde6jaQ1mw7hmvI6trlA\nNote: If you have any access needs\, require ASL interpretation\, or prefer to register via email or phone\, please reach out to us at register@jbilibrary.org or 646-616-3929.

SUMMARY:Robert Glasper + Alain Pérez
DESCRIPTION:This can’t-miss opening night of Lincoln Center’s Summer for the City features two performances from major contemporary superstars\, offering a vision of a spectacularly full musical future defined by genius and limitless possibility. Over an already storied 20-year career\, the multiple GRAMMY Award-winning producer\, composer\, pianist\, and culture creator Robert Glasper has seamlessly reintegrated the intersecting spirits of modern jazz\, R&B\, and Hip-Hop. Glasper’s Black Radio album project ushered in a generation of listeners for whom genre means far less than musicality. Next to hit the stage is Cuban bassist and polymath musician Alain Pérez\, who joins us as part of his Bingo summer tour. The Latin GRAMMY Award winner\, Alain Pérez & La Orquesta\, has earned an international reputation as a creative innovator whose Latin roots provide a foundation for bold expression and expansion.
