Educators highlight specific themes\, artists\, or exhibitions through verbal description\, multisensory experiences\, and discussion in the galleries or using the Zoom platform. \nTogether we will explore the exhibition Jack Whitten: The Messenger with teaching artist Jamie Mirabella. Spanning nearly six decades\, this exhibition is the first full retrospective of Whitten’s innovative practice\, featuring more than 175 paintings\, sculptures\, and works on paper that illuminate his singular vision. Featuring numerous works that have never before been shown\, the exhibition presents the artist’s revelatory exploration of culture\, race\, technology\, jazz\, love\, and war. \nRegistration opens on March 24\, 2025\, at 10:00 a.m. \nArt inSight is offered free of charge. DESCRIPTION:Reception Friday\, Apr 25 from 6-8p \nCuchifritos Gallery is very pleased to present Explicit!!!\, featuring new work by NYC-based artist Sue Jeong Ka on view from April 25 through June 21\, 2025. \nExplicit!!! builds on Ka’s ongoing investigation of the censorship practices within the U.S. carceral system\, focusing on publication bans across 26 states. Through her research\, Ka reveals how book censorship operates as a tool of racial\, sexual\, and cultural control. She illuminates biases that specifically target works by marginalized authors\, especially those presenting sexually liberal narratives or culturally non-Western perspectives. \nFor this exhibition\, AAI LES Studio Program alum (2023) Ka presents a series of site-responsive works\, including kinetic sculptures\, large-scale wall installations\, and a public program series that fosters vibrant dialogue among artists\, researchers\, and community members in the Lower East Side and Chinatown. These works invite visitors to reflect not only on prison censorship but also on the broader patterns of content suppression in public education and cultural institutions—systems intricately intertwined with the policing of racial and sexual knowledge. \nThe core of Explicit!!! is Ka’s data analysis of manga—a genre of comics and graphic novels predominantly created by East Asian artists. Across various state prison systems\, manga is frequently classified as “sexually explicit\,” leading to its prohibition in prison libraries and preventing its distribution to incarcerated readers. In parallel\, New York City public schools have removed manga titles like “Assassination Classroom\,” citing moral concerns regarding their content. These acts of censorship—whether in prisons or schools—are not isolated incidents; they embody a broader infrastructure that dictates which stories are acceptable and whose cultural expressions are silenced.

DESCRIPTION:Join the artists of New York City Ballet in these movement workshops designed especially for children with autism and their families. \nDuring these one-hour events\, children will be guided in a ballet-based warm-up and choreography inspired by a featured ballet being performed this season. Workshops feature live piano accompaniment and a designated quiet space will be available. DESCRIPTION:Join us for sensory-friendly hours at the Jackie Robinson Museum\, held on the first Friday afternoon of each month and specially designed for neurodivergent visitors\, including youth and their families\, teens\, and adults. ACCESS JRM Fridays will feature limited general admission for reduced crowds and quieter gallery spaces with exhibit audio reduced or silenced. \nIn addition to our KultureCity resources available at all times\, ACCESS JRM hours will include availability of a dedicated quiet zone and interpretive offerings such as tours\, picture book readings\, and tactile learning opportunities for inclusive exploration. All age groups are welcome! \nACCESS JRM is mostly a self-guided experience and not designed as a drop-off activity. All children and youth ticket holders must be accompanied by an adult.

Join Uyghur poet and memoirist Tahir Hamut Izgil (Waiting to Be Arrested at Night) and Iraqi American poet Dunya Mikhail (Tablets: Secrets of the Clay) as they discuss how their writing challenges dominant political narratives and preserves stories of displacement\, exile and perseverance. \nIn his memoir Waiting to Be Arrested at Night\, Tahir Hamut Izgil documents the Chinese government’s persecution of the Uyghur people and his time in a labor-camp. In Dunya Mikhail’s poetry collection Tablets: Secrets of Clay\, she explores the memories and legacies of her families’ exile from Iraq while looking back at Iraqi history. Moderated by novelist Mojgan Ghazirad (The House on Sun Street)\, this panel will delve into the urgency of documenting personal and collective experiences and how the act of writing both engenders change and urges us towards a future of complex understanding.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fun\, upbeat program of hot jazz\, American Songbook\, tango\, and more at our spring season finale: Cynthia Sayer’s Hot Jazz Party! An American Banjo Hall of Famer and Steve Martin Banjo Prize winner\, Cynthia and her all-star Joyride band just might get you swinging\, clapping\, and even singing along! \nThis event is part of Lincoln Center Moments\, a free performance-based program specially designed for individuals with dementia and their caregivers. \nPerformances at 11:00 am are Relaxed Performances\, designed for a neurodiverse audience. In addition to audiences impacted by dementia\, these performances are also open to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. \nPerformances at 1:00 pm are followed by an hour-long workshop specially designed for audiences impacted by dementia—facilitated by educators and music therapists that explore the work through discussion\, movement\, music\, and art-making.

DESCRIPTION:The Guggenheim New York celebrates the ideas\, people\, and art at the core of its mission by offering virtual and in-person Mind’s Eye programming for participants who are blind or have low vision. Join us for a tour of the exhibitions A Year With Children and Rashid Johnson: A Poem for Deep Thinkers. \nWe’ll invite you to consider the artistic connections between select artworks by Rashid Johnson alongside work by student artists participating in Learning Through Art\, the Guggenheim’s artist-in-residence program in New York City public elementary schools. Think deeply with us as we engage in a shared exploration of the themes\, materials\, and mediums found in both exhibitions. \nThis month’s Mind’s Eye programming will be led by Guggenheim educators through verbal description and conversation. The virtual sessions will be accessible by web link or by dial-in phone number\, depending on your preference. \nThe program is repeated both online and in person. Dive into the rich culinary traditions and cultural significance of Jewish cuisine\, as we explore the historical and social contexts that have shaped these beloved dishes. Using the book “Eat and Be Satisfied\,” this program promises to be a delightful journey through the stories and importance of Jewish food. Part two of the series will focus on chapters 3 and 4: food during the Talmudic Era (also known as the first millennium of the Common Era)\, and part three of the series will discuss chapters 5 and 6: food during the Medieval Era. SUMMARY:ACCESS JRM: Sensory-Friendly Hours
DESCRIPTION:Join us for sensory-friendly hours at the Jackie Robinson Museum\, held on the first Friday afternoon of each month and specially designed for neurodivergent visitors\, including youth and their families\, teens\, and adults. ACCESS JRM Fridays will feature limited general admission for reduced crowds and quieter gallery spaces with exhibit audio reduced or silenced. \nIn addition to our KultureCity resources available at all times\, ACCESS JRM hours will include availability of a dedicated quiet zone and interpretive offerings such as tours\, picture book readings\, and tactile learning opportunities for inclusive exploration. All age groups are welcome! \nACCESS JRM is mostly a self-guided experience and not designed as a drop-off activity. All children and youth ticket holders must be accompanied by an adult.
