They are playful and eager for attention. \nSince 1991\, Close-Act Theatre from The Netherlands (founded by Hesther Melief and Tonny Aerts)\, has specialized in large-scale\, interactive street theater for everyone. The company’s unique form of elevated performance is performed in\, between\, and above the public. Close-Act’s creations have been performed around the globe. DESCRIPTION:Please note that masking is mandatory for this performance. \nVisual Description: Alice Sheppard and Laurel Lawson curl into themselves on the floor of a black studio. Alice lies back to the floor\, legs and torso cradling Laurel who is lying on Alice’s belly and curling into a tight ball. Their eyes are closed and they are embracing a gentle moment. Alice Sheppard and Laurel Lawson from Kinetic Light will be presenting a work-in-progress excerpt from their newest dance work\, The Next T.i.M.es\, and additional Kinetic Light works. \nWorking in the disciplines of art\, technology\, design\, and dance\, Kinetic Light creates\, performs\, and teaches at the nexus of access\, queerness\, disability\, dance\, and race. The company is led by disabled artists; disabled artists create\, design\, and perform the work. A Bessie award-winning choreographer\, Sheppard creates movement that challenges conventional understandings of disabled and dancing bodies. \nLaurel Lawson (flexible pronouns) is a choreographic collaborator\, dancer\, designer\, and engineer with Kinetic Light. She is the primary costume and makeup designer and designs the wheelchairs that she and Alice use in performance. Laurel is also the product designer and lead for access\, software\, and access curriculum initiatives\, including Kinetic Light’s signature program Access ALLways.

Our intention is to create space for people to gather to consider a range of perspectives and think critically through a guided reading of key texts that can help illuminate new ways of looking at artwork on view in MoMA’s galleries. Inspired by posters from the museum’s collection\, visitors will practice writing\, discussing\, and reframing this type of accessible writing. DESCRIPTION:Gospel\, funk\, soul\, and Afrobeat come together in this joyful presentation of Rodgers and Hammerstein songs as viewed through a utopian\, afrofuturistic lens. The Sound of (Black) Music is a vibrant one-act concert reimagining of the classic musical\, featuring songs such as “Do-Re-Mi\,” “Edelweiss\,” and “Climb Ev’ry Mountain\,” all recast through a Black Roots music kaleidoscope. Created for 20 musicians and vocalists curated by Michael Mwenso and Jono Gasparro\, in association with Electric Root\, co-directed by Shariffa Ali and Kamilah Long with arrangements by Mathis Picard and music direction by Charenee Wade\, the concert channels the singular musical gifts of some of today’s most talented Black musicians into an overflowing celebration of Black Roots music.
