DESCRIPTION:The Guggenheim is continuing to celebrate the ideas\, people\, and art at the core of its mission by offering virtual and in-person Mind’s Eye programming for participants who are blind or have low vision. This program features the current exhibition Only the Young: Experimental Art in Korea\, 1960s–1970s. \nThis exhibition centers a network of key artists who\, in the pivotal decades following the Korean War\, pushed boundaries in response to a rapidly changing socioeconomic and political landscape. Visitors encounter a variety of mediums in the show including painting\, sculpture\, photography\, video\, and installation. Join us in exploring an era of remarkable transformation in South Korea during this in-person program at the museum. \nThis month’s Mind’s Eye programming will be led by artist and educator Maya Jeffereis through verbal description and conversation.

DESCRIPTION:The Center for Disability Studies and Grey Art Gallery at NYU invite you to join Emilie L. Gossiaux for a virtual artist talk in advance of her debut museum solo exhibition\, “Other-Worlding”\, at the Queens Museum in New York City. Gossiaux will be in conversation with Georgina Kleege\, author of “More than Meets the Eye: What Blindness Brings to Art”. Gossiaux and Kleege will preview Gossiaux’s exhibit\, discuss her artistic practice\, and consider the ways a disabled artist’s experience can inform how museums provide access. \nEmilie L. Gossiaux is a multidisciplinary artist whose works center disability pride through her investigations of the complex relationships between humans and animals in the Anthropocene\, or the human-impacted world. Gossiaux’s work fosters imagination\, liberation\, and pleasure in opposition to the Anthropocene’s exploitative systems of capitalism and ableism. For her first museum solo exhibition\, Gossiaux will create a large-scale sculptural installation that both expands upon her deep and sincere relationship with her guide dog\, London\, and celebrates the white cane as a symbol of freedom. \nGeorgina Kleege is Professor Emeritus of English at UC Berkeley. She now lives in New York City. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a tour of Cooper Hewitt’s current exhibition\, Give Me A Sign: The Language of Symbols\, co-led by curator Emily Orr and Accessibility & Inclusion Manager Kirsten Sweeney in collaboration with the NYPL Heiskell Braille & Talking Book Library. Together\, we will examine the fascinating history behind many of the symbols that instruct\, protect\, entertain\, empower\, and connect people\, and discuss the ways visual and non-visual symbols show up in our daily lives. Rich verbal descriptions and tactile recreations of symbols will accompany the tour.  \nAfter the tour\, join us for an interactive drawing workshop. Using Sensational Blackboards for tactile drawing\, we will take what we’ve learned about the building blocks of symbols to design our own. DESCRIPTION:This Disability Pride Month\, join us for a poetry reading facilitated by Joselia Hughes featuring poets Kay Ulanday Barrett\, Dan Schapiro\, and Jackie Torres\, and in conjunction with the thirty-third anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Hughes framed this poetry reading with this invitation:  \n  \nLet’s be potent and clear: it is summer 2023\, the covid-19 pandemic rages\, neglect from the status quo proliferates\, many of our comrades have died\, many more of our communities are dying and becoming increasingly debilitated. It is July which means it is Disability Pride Month. In the face of unwavering violence\, Pride is a complicating energy to hold. It is neither just the appreciation of progress nor an acknowledgement of one’s efforts. Pride is a collective rally into the necessity of and our presence to dignity—in living\, in death\, in sorrow\, in celebration. The dignity of ourselves as individuals within a network of many. The dignity of our breathing. The dignity of our struggle. The dignity of our being here now\, our being there then\, our will to be again. In a small chorus\, Dan Schapiro\, Jackie Torres\, and Kay Ulanday Barrett will offer  up songs\, chants\, memories\, directives\, considerations\, dreams\, and much more on how we can continue our mission of dignified life for all of us.  \n  \nThis event will take place on Zoom and will be accompanied by an cozy in-person viewing in the Susan and John Hess Family Theater for folks who wish to convene in person. Heidi Latsky Dance is an NYC-based\, physically integrated company\, creating daring work with people with disabilities since 2006. \n\n12–3 p.m.\, Multi-Sensory Table\, Join us to explore plants and their products from the Garden’s collections through this tabletop multi-sensory experience.  \n\n2:30 p.m.\, ASL Magnificent Tree Tour\, What makes a tree notable? It could be its size\, bark\, uses\, or a variety of other features. Some of our trees have been here prior to the Garden’s formal establishment in 1891. This tour\, led by an NYBG Tour Guide accompanied by an American Sign Language interpreter\, gives visitors who are deaf an enhanced experience. \n\nThroughout July; 10 a.m.–5:30 p.m.\, Children’s Sensory Experience\, Everett Children’s Adventure Garden\, Explore our sensory-friendly Peacock and Vulture sculptures in the Children’s Garden in celebration of Ebony G. Join us in July to explore the current exhibition Sarah Sze: Timelapse. \nIn this solo exhibition\, artist Sarah Sze reimagines the Guggenheim’s iconic Frank Lloyd Wright–designed building as a public timekeeper\, creating immersive environments and a series of site-specific multisensory installations to activate our collective experience and memory. Visitors encounter a variety of mediums in the show including painting\, sculpture\, sound\, video\, and architecture. \nJoin us in exploring and challenging concepts of time and memory. As a group\, we’ll engage with\, in the artist’s own words\, “a contemplation on how we mark time and how time marks us.” In both in-person and virtual sessions\, we’ll have a chance to reflect on and respond to the passage of time. \nJuly’s Mind’s Eye programming will be led by artist and educator Rukhshan Haque through verbal description and conversation. Learn the basics of this modern printing technique while creating your own print. \n4pm Crip Camp Screening\nCrip Camp is a documentary that tells the story of Camp Jened\, a summer camp for people with disabilities\, and the role the camp played in spurring the 1990 passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
