DESCRIPTION:Roses are red\,  \nViolets are blue  \nThe Guggenheim’s art  \nHas love letters for you.  \nThe Guggenheim is continuing to celebrate the ideas\, people\, and art at the core of its mission by offering virtual and in-person Mind’s Eye programming for participants who are blind or have low vision. \nIn honor of Valentine’s Day\, join us for this month’s Mind’s Eye to exchange verbal description love letters with Guggenheim artworks. We’ll take a lighthearted approach\, with some artworks sharing their own love letters with the group and a chance to get creative and romantic with the language we use to appreciate art. This session features all new love letters from all new artworks\, so if you’ve been to a previous Love Letters session\, you’ll be just as surprised as any newcomers. \nThis month’s Mind’s Eye virtual programming will be led by educator Rachel Ropeik through verbal description and conversation. In the great tradition of slapstick comedians like The Three Stooges\, La Compagnie Zolobe’s clown trio uses physical comedy and body language to tell their story while remaining completely silent. They are accompanied by a musician who plays traditional instruments: kabosy (a rectangular guitar) and djembe (drum). The word sakasaka means “thirsty” in Malagasy and\, using just a mop\, bucket and a few bottles of water\, the clowns take audiences on hilarious adventures that gently and sincerely explore the preciousness of water. Laugh out loud and learn important lessons as you go on a journey of dance\, music\, splashes\, and joy!

DESCRIPTION:Visitors who are blind or have low vision are invited to join Emilie L. Gossiaux and sonia louise davis in a virtual verbal description tour of their respective exhibitions\, Other-Worlding and to reverberate tenderly. Using various media and approaches across sculpture\, drawing\, painting\, figuration\, abstraction\, and improvisation\, Gossiaux and davis find common ground in their pursuit of softness and joy as a mode of resistance. Join these two artists as they each verbally describe three works from their solo exhibitions and discuss their work with participants. \nEmilie L. Gossiaux: Other-Worlding celebrates the autonomy that guide dogs and the white cane provide the blind and low-vision community in navigating a world predominantly designed for sighted people. Central to this exhibition is the question: can we imagine another world where unity is co-built across species and disability status? Through large-scale sculptural installation and drawings\, Gossiaux creates a world beyond the hierarchical structures of capitalism and ableism. \nsonia louise davis: to reverberate tenderly focuses on improvisation as a crucial practice of care\, resilience\, and self-determination in the face of systemic injustices. Situated within a lineage of Black feminist abstraction and avant-garde music\, davis’ invented graphic notation system invites new ways of resonating\, vibrating\, gesturing\, listening\, and responding. Throughout the exhibition\, davis presents this visual vocabulary in tufted soft paintings\, a site-specific mural with neons\, sculptural instruments\, and performances that engage with the process of improvisation as a generative and emancipatory form of research. \nThis two-hour program will be facilitated by Sarah Cho\, Assistant Curator. She has presented her work at the Whitney Museum (NY)\, ACRE (Chicago)\, Sadie Halie Projects (Minneapolis)\, Ortega y Gasset (Brooklyn)\,  and Artists Space (NY)\, among other venues. Residencies and fellowships include the Laundromat Project’s Create Change Fellowship\, Civitella Ranieri\, New York Community Trust Van Lier Fellowship at the International Studio & Curatorial Program\, Culture Push Fellowship for Utopian Practice\, and Stoneleaf Retreat. Her newest book\, slow and soft and righteous\, improvising at the end of the world (and how we make a new one) was published in 2021 by Co—Conspirator Press\, which operates out of the Feminist Center for Creative Work in Los Angeles. Sonia lives and works in Harlem. \nEmilie L. Gossiaux (b. 1989 New Orleans\, LA) lives and works in New York City. Gossiaux earned a BFA from the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in 2014\, and an MFA from Yale School of Art in 2019. Her solo shows include Memory of a Body (2020) and Significant Otherness (2022) at Mother Gallery\, among others. Select group exhibitions include Crip Time\, Museum für Moderne Kunst Frankfurt (2021); Greater New York\, MoMA PS1 (2021); and 52 Artists\, A Feminist Milestone\, The Aldrich Contemporary (2022); among others. Gossiaux was awarded a John F. Kennedy Center’s VSA Prize (2013)\, the Wynn Newhouse Award (2019)\, a NYFA Barbara and Carl Zydney Grant (2021)\, the Colene Brown Art Prize (2022)\, and The Pébéo Production Prize (2023). Her work has been featured in publications such as The Brooklyn Rail\, The New Yorker\, Art in America\, and Topical Cream Magazine.

DESCRIPTION:Posters are a visual medium. How can they be made more accessible to the blind and low vision community? Poster House is thrilled to welcome Finnegan Shannon (they/them) and Bojana Coklyat (she/her) as they lead visitors through a workshop on how to reframe alt text (short\, written descriptions of images) as a type of poetry. Inspired by posters from the museum’s collection\, visitors will practice writing\, discussing\, and reframing this type of accessible writing. To learn more about this larger project\, visit the Alt Text as Poetry website. \nAccessibility Notes: \nAn ASL interpreter and assistive listening devices will be provided. Seating will include stools and chairs. DESCRIPTION:The Guggenheim is continuing to celebrate the ideas\, people\, and art at the core of its mission by offering virtual and in-person Mind’s Eye programming for participants who are blind or have low vision. Join us in November to explore the exhibition Going Dark: The Contemporary Figure at the Edge of Visibility. \nThis exhibition highlights a multigenerational group of artists who engage the “semi-visible” figure—representations that are partially obscured\, including\, in some cases\, literally darkened. Using the concept of “going dark\,” these artists reflect on enduring and urgent questions surrounding social visibility. Visitors encounter in the show a variety of mediums\, including painting\, sculpture\, photography\, video\, and installation. Join us in exploring and interpreting the semi-visible figure during both in-person and virtual sessions \nThis month’s Mind’s Eye programming will be led by artist and educator Rukhshan Haque through verbal description and conversation. SUMMARY:La Banda Chuska
DESCRIPTION:La Banda Chuska merges the sounds of vintage Peruvian cumbia and psychedelic chicha with 1960s Latin American and Middle Eastern surf rock. They then add a dose of the surreal intensity of New York City to amplify their diverse musical and cultural backgrounds: Peru\, Argentina\, Puerto Rico\, and various corners of the U.S. The result is a fireball of post-punk energy and subversive playfulness\, a sort of tropical funk meets The B-52s. La Banda Chuska’s self-titled EP is a darkly cinematic\, musically expansive\, and eminently danceable weirdo party on wax that’s whipped up the fanbase they attract at regular performances at Brooklyn’s Barbés and other NYC music mainstays. For their Lincoln Center debut\, they’ll play songs from their first EP and introduce new cuts from their forthcoming LP.
