SUMMARY:Mind's Eye at the Guggenheim - Orphism
DESCRIPTION:The Guggenheim celebrates the ideas\, people\, and art at the core of its mission by offering virtual and in-person Mind’s Eye programming for participants who are blind or have low vision. Join us in November for a tour of our newest exhibition Harmony and Dissonance: Orphism in Paris\, 1910-1930.\n\nThis major exhibition will examine the vibrant abstract art of Orphism\, explore its developments in Paris\, and the impact dance\, music\, and poetry\, among other disciplines\, had on the art.\n\nOrphism emerged in the early 1910s\, when the innovations brought about by modern life were radically altering conceptions of time and space. Artists connected to Orphism engaged with ideas of simultaneity in kaleidoscopic compositions\, investigating the transformative possibilities of color\, form\, and motion. Selected works by artists including Robert Delaunay\, Sonia Delaunay\, Marcel Duchamp\, Mainie Jellett\, František Kupka\, Francis Picabia\, and Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso\, and by the Synchromists Stanton Macdonald-Wright and Morgan Russell\, will be on view.\n\nThis month’s Mind’s Eye programming will be led by artist and educator Maya Jeffereis through verbal description and conversation. The virtual session will be accessible by web link or by dial-in phone number\, depending on your preference.\n\nThe same program will be offered twice virtually and twice in person; please RSVP for only one session.\n\nVirtual Sessions:\nMonday\, November 4\, 6:30–8:30pm ET\nWednesday\, November 6\, 2–4pm ET\n\nIn Person Sessions:\nMonday\, November 11\, 6:30–8:30pm ET\nWednesday\, November 13\, 2–4pm ET\n\nFree\, but space is limited. DESCRIPTION:Members of the low-vision and blind community are invited to an in-person Vibrant Verbal Description Tour at Poster House. This after-hours event will provide exclusive access to the museum’s exhibition\, Just Frame It: How Nike Turned Sports Stars into Superheroes. The tour will be led by a Museum Educator. This intimate experience will allow guests to get up close with the posters described\, as well as provide additional tactile objects to help illuminate the art. \nWhile everyone is welcome\, Poster House offers Vibrant Verbal Description Tours specifically for community members who are blind\, have low vision\, or who benefit from verbal descriptions. \nAccessibility Notes: Our front door is wheelchair accessible. Masks are encouraged during this event and are available free of charge at the museum. Clear masks are also available. They are playful and eager for attention. \nSince 1991\, Close-Act Theatre from The Netherlands (founded by Hesther Melief and Tonny Aerts)\, has specialized in large-scale\, interactive street theater for everyone. The company’s unique form of elevated performance is performed in\, between\, and above the public. Close-Act’s creations have been performed around the globe. Alice Sheppard and Laurel Lawson from Kinetic Light will be presenting a work-in-progress excerpt from their newest dance work\, The Next T.i.M.es\, and additional Kinetic Light works. \nWorking in the disciplines of art\, technology\, design\, and dance\, Kinetic Light creates\, performs\, and teaches at the nexus of access\, queerness\, disability\, dance\, and race. The company is led by disabled artists; disabled artists create\, design\, and perform the work. A Bessie award-winning choreographer\, Sheppard creates movement that challenges conventional understandings of disabled and dancing bodies. \nLaurel Lawson (flexible pronouns) is a choreographic collaborator\, dancer\, designer\, and engineer with Kinetic Light. She is the primary costume and makeup designer and designs the wheelchairs that she and Alice use in performance. Laurel is also the product designer and lead for access\, software\, and access curriculum initiatives\, including Kinetic Light’s signature program Access ALLways.
