SUMMARY:Book club with Joan: Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker
DESCRIPTION:Book: Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker \nChava is a golem\, a creature made of clay\, brought to life by a disgraced rabbi who dabbles in dark Kabbalistic magic\, created to be the wife of a man who dies at sea on the voyage from Poland. Chava is unmoored and adrift as the ship arrives in New York harbor in 1899. Ahmad is a jinni\, a being of fire born in the ancient Syrian desert\, trapped in an old copper flask\, and released in New York City\, though still not entirely free. \nAhmad and Chava become unlikely friends and soul mates with a mystical connection. Marvelous and compulsively readable\, Helene Wecker’s debut novel The Golem and the Jinni weaves strands of Yiddish and Middle Eastern literature\, historical fiction and magical fable\, into a wondrously inventive and unforgettable tale. \nThis book is available from NLS as DB76801 for audio. Download it through BARD at nlsbard.loc.gov\, the BARD Mobile app\, or request them from your local NLS library. This book is also available in digital braille if you are a Bookshare member\, and we can emboss it for you if you would like it in hard copy braille.    \nTo register\, or if you have any access needs or require ASL interpretation\, contact us at register@jbilibrary.org or 646-616-3929.

SUMMARY:Guggenheim Mind's Eye: Harmony and Dissonance
DESCRIPTION:The Guggenheim celebrates the ideas\, people\, and art at the core of its mission by offering virtual and in-person Mind’s Eye programming for participants who are blind or have low vision. Join us this month for a second tour of the exhibition Harmony and Dissonance: Orphism in Paris\, 1910–1930. Prior attendance at the first program in November is not necessary to enjoy this new exploration\, which features additional artworks. \nOrphism emerged in the early 1910s\, when the innovations brought about by modern life were radically altering conceptions of time and space. Artists connected to Orphism engaged with ideas of simultaneity in kaleidoscopic compositions\, investigating the transformative possibilities of color\, form\, and motion. Selected works by artists including Robert Delaunay\, Sonia Delaunay\, Marcel Duchamp\, Mainie Jellett\, František Kupka\, Francis Picabia\, and Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso\, and by the Synchromists Stanton Macdonald-Wright and Morgan Russell\, will be on view. \nThis month’s Mind’s Eye programming will be led by artist and educator Maya Jeffereis through verbal description and conversation. The virtual session will be accessible by web link or by dial-in phone number\, depending on your preference. \nThe same program will be offered twice virtually and twice in person; please RSVP for only one session. \nIn-person programs: \n\nMonday\, March 3\, 6:30-8:30pm Eastern\nWednesday\, March 5\, 2:00-4:00pm Eastern\n\nVirtual programs: \n\nMonday\, March 10\, 6:30-8:30pm Eastern\nWednesday\, March 12\, 2:00-4:00pm Eastern\n\nFree\, but space is limited. RSVP is required three days before the program. To RSVP\, call 212 360 4355 or email access@guggenheim.org.

SUMMARY:Free Off-Broadway Audio Described Performance — In the Amazon Warehouse Parking Lot at Playwrights Horizon
DESCRIPTION:We at Playwrights Horizons are excited to extend an invitation to a Touch Tour & Audio Described performance of Sarah Mantell’s In the Amazon Warehouse Parking Lot on Thursday\, November 7th\, 2024 at 7:30 pm.\n\nAbout In the Amazon Warehouse Parking Lot:\nAs the oceans rise\, a band of queer warehouse workers travel from job to job\, running from the encroaching coastline. An unlikely love story\, and a startling new work of speculative fiction\, In the Amazon Warehouse Parking Lot is a quietly revolutionary tale of queer aging\, chosen family\, and the search for home in a volatile world.\n\n\nAbout the Touch Tour & Audio Described Performance:\nIn the context of out theater productions\, an audio described performance improves access for blind or low vision theatergoers by providing a live verbal commentary on the visual elements of a production\, broadcast through a headset. Delivered around the dialogue\, it describes action that is essential to the understanding of the story\, as well as information such as the set\, costumes\, facial expressions\, and visual jokes that might otherwise be missed. Our audio describer articulates the design and direction on stage via a personal listening device. Devices (both DLDs & ALDs) are available for check out at the concessions stand\, photo ID required.\n\n\nAn optional touch tour precedes the performance\, giving participants an opportunity to go on stage\, meet the cast\, and have a tactile experience with key set\, costume and props. Service animals\, 1:1 companions\, and family & friends are welcome on the Touch Tours. To address any economic barriers\, we have various ticketing options available\, including complimentary tickets—we have reserved 30 free tickets.
