SUMMARY:Guggenheim Museum: Poetry Is Not A Luxury
DESCRIPTION:Poetry Is Not a Luxury \n\n\nGrounded in the sentiment of Audre Lorde’s 1977 essay “Poetry Is Not a Luxury\,” this two-day gathering brings contemporary artists and poets together with museum audiences to explore poetry’s ability to invoke sensuality\, caesura\, and care. Designed by 2023 Poet-in-Residence Ama Codjoe\, this convening of discussion and exchange will illuminate poetry’s role in enabling humans to imagine\, dream\, and craft the kind of language that precipitates political action\, communal nurturing\, and social change. \n\n \n\nNovember 10 \n\n\nPoetry Is Not a Luxury Day 1: Poetic Freedom \n\n\n5-6:30pm ET (Virtual) \nLink to event page \n\n\nThis first day of the Poetry Is Not a Luxury program\, entitled Poetic Freedom\, will feature a live taping of the Poetry Foundation’s VS podcast with co-hosts Ajanaé Dawkins and Brittany Rogers and guests Arisa White and LaTasha N. Nevada Diggs. Attendees in this participatory event will have the chance to reflect on notions of care\, freedom\, and intimacy through group conversation\, interactive games\, and engaged listening. \n\n\nIn-person tickets for this program are sold out\, but the event will be livestreamed on the Poetry Foundation’s website. This program will include ASL interpretation and auto-captioning. \n\n\n  \n\n\nNovember 11 \n\n\nPoetry Is Not a Luxury Day 2: Poetic License  \n\n\n1-5pm ET (In-Person) \n\n\nLink to RSVP \n\n\nIn this second day of the Poetry Is Not a Luxury program\, entitled Poetic License\, poets and artists will share new work\, work in-progress\, and artistic reflections that express Lorde’s conviction that “poetry is not a luxury.” Featuring panel discussions\, poetry readings\, and performances\, the day will be interspersed with moments of grounding and personal reflection alongside pauses for inter-audience dialogue and connection. This program is free with RSVP and will include ASL interpretation. \n\nParticipants include Alexandra Bell\, Gabrielle Civil\, Alexis Pauline Gumbs\, Daria Simone Harper\, francine j. harris\, Omotara James\, Charleen McClure\, Ladan Osman\, Nicole Sealey\, Evie Shockley\, Lyrae Van Clief-Stefanon\, and Robyne Walker Murphy. SUMMARY:La Banda Chuska
DESCRIPTION:La Banda Chuska merges the sounds of vintage Peruvian cumbia and psychedelic chicha with 1960s Latin American and Middle Eastern surf rock. They then add a dose of the surreal intensity of New York City to amplify their diverse musical and cultural backgrounds: Peru\, Argentina\, Puerto Rico\, and various corners of the U.S. The result is a fireball of post-punk energy and subversive playfulness\, a sort of tropical funk meets The B-52s. La Banda Chuska’s self-titled EP is a darkly cinematic\, musically expansive\, and eminently danceable weirdo party on wax that’s whipped up the fanbase they attract at regular performances at Brooklyn’s Barbés and other NYC music mainstays. For their Lincoln Center debut\, they’ll play songs from their first EP and introduce new cuts from their forthcoming LP.

SUMMARY:Mind's Eye at the Guggenheim - Going Dark
DESCRIPTION:The Guggenheim is continuing to celebrate the ideas\, people\, and art at the core of its mission by offering virtual and in-person Mind’s Eye programming for participants who are blind or have low vision. Join us in November to explore the exhibition Going Dark: The Contemporary Figure at the Edge of Visibility. \nThis exhibition highlights a multigenerational group of artists who engage the “semi-visible” figure—representations that are partially obscured\, including\, in some cases\, literally darkened. Using the concept of “going dark\,” these artists reflect on enduring and urgent questions surrounding social visibility. Visitors encounter in the show a variety of mediums\, including painting\, sculpture\, photography\, video\, and installation. Join us in exploring and interpreting the semi-visible figure during both in-person and virtual sessions \nThis month’s Mind’s Eye programming will be led by artist and educator Rukhshan Haque through verbal description and conversation. The virtual session will be accessible by web link or by dial-in phone number\, depending on your preference. \nThe same program will be offered twice virtually and twice in person; please RSVP for only one session.   \n\nRSVP: Monday\, November 13\, 6:30-8:30pm VIRTUAL\nRSVP: Wednesday\, November 15\, 2:00-4:00pm VIRTUAL\nRSVP: Monday\, November 20\, 6:30-8:30pm IN PERSON\nRSVP: Wednesday\, November 29\, 2:00-4:00pm IN PERSON \n\nFree\, but space is limited.
