SUMMARY:First Friday: Alt Text As Poetry Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Posters are a visual medium. How can they be made more accessible to the blind and low vision community? Poster House is thrilled to welcome Finnegan Shannon (they/them) and Bojana Coklyat (she/her) as they lead visitors through a workshop on how to reframe alt text (short\, written descriptions of images) as a type of poetry. Inspired by posters from the museum’s collection\, visitors will practice writing\, discussing\, and reframing this type of accessible writing. To learn more about this larger project\, visit the Alt Text as Poetry website. \nAccessibility Notes: \nAn ASL interpreter and assistive listening devices will be provided. Seating will include stools and chairs. DESCRIPTION:Poetry Is Not a Luxury \n\n\nGrounded in the sentiment of Audre Lorde’s 1977 essay “Poetry Is Not a Luxury\,” this two-day gathering brings contemporary artists and poets together with museum audiences to explore poetry’s ability to invoke sensuality\, caesura\, and care. Designed by 2023 Poet-in-Residence Ama Codjoe\, this convening of discussion and exchange will illuminate poetry’s role in enabling humans to imagine\, dream\, and craft the kind of language that precipitates political action\, communal nurturing\, and social change. \n\n \n\nNovember 10 \n\n\nPoetry Is Not a Luxury Day 1: Poetic Freedom \n\n\n5-6:30pm ET (Virtual) \nLink to event page \n\n\nThis first day of the Poetry Is Not a Luxury program\, entitled Poetic Freedom\, will feature a live taping of the Poetry Foundation’s VS podcast with co-hosts Ajanaé Dawkins and Brittany Rogers and guests Arisa White and LaTasha N. Nevada Diggs. Attendees in this participatory event will have the chance to reflect on notions of care\, freedom\, and intimacy through group conversation\, interactive games\, and engaged listening. \n\n\nIn-person tickets for this program are sold out\, but the event will be livestreamed on the Poetry Foundation’s website. This program will include ASL interpretation and auto-captioning. \n\n\n  \n\n\nNovember 11 \n\n\nPoetry Is Not a Luxury Day 2: Poetic License  \n\n\n1-5pm ET (In-Person) \n\n\nLink to RSVP \n\n\nIn this second day of the Poetry Is Not a Luxury program\, entitled Poetic License\, poets and artists will share new work\, work in-progress\, and artistic reflections that express Lorde’s conviction that “poetry is not a luxury.” Featuring panel discussions\, poetry readings\, and performances\, the day will be interspersed with moments of grounding and personal reflection alongside pauses for inter-audience dialogue and connection. DESCRIPTION:This Disability Pride Month\, join us for a poetry reading facilitated by Joselia Hughes featuring poets Kay Ulanday Barrett\, Dan Schapiro\, and Jackie Torres\, and in conjunction with the thirty-third anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Hughes framed this poetry reading with this invitation:  \n  \nLet’s be potent and clear: it is summer 2023\, the covid-19 pandemic rages\, neglect from the status quo proliferates\, many of our comrades have died\, many more of our communities are dying and becoming increasingly debilitated. It is July which means it is Disability Pride Month. In the face of unwavering violence\, Pride is a complicating energy to hold. It is neither just the appreciation of progress nor an acknowledgement of one’s efforts. Pride is a collective rally into the necessity of and our presence to dignity—in living\, in death\, in sorrow\, in celebration. The dignity of ourselves as individuals within a network of many. The dignity of our breathing. The dignity of our struggle. The dignity of our being here now\, our being there then\, our will to be again. In a small chorus\, Dan Schapiro\, Jackie Torres\, and Kay Ulanday Barrett will offer  up songs\, chants\, memories\, directives\, considerations\, dreams\, and much more on how we can continue our mission of dignified life for all of us.  \n  \nThis event will take place on Zoom and will be accompanied by an cozy in-person viewing in the Susan and John Hess Family Theater for folks who wish to convene in person. Heidi Latsky Dance is an NYC-based\, physically integrated company\, creating daring work with people with disabilities since 2006. \n\n12–3 p.m.\, Multi-Sensory Table\, Join us to explore plants and their products from the Garden’s collections through this tabletop multi-sensory experience.  \n\n2:30 p.m.\, ASL Magnificent Tree Tour\, What makes a tree notable? It could be its size\, bark\, uses\, or a variety of other features. Some of our trees have been here prior to the Garden’s formal establishment in 1891. Join Poster House Accessibility Coordinator Sarit Cahana in conversation with Kirsten Sweeny\, Accessibility & Inclusion Manager at Cooper Hewitt\, Smithsonian Design Museum for an engaging conversation on the important relationship between disability pride and disability justice. Questions strongly encouraged! \n2pm Woodblock Inspired Printing Workshop\nInspired by the ukiyo-e tradition featured in the acclaimed exhibition Made in Japan: 20th-Century Poster Art\, join artist and educator Sato Yamamoto for a hands-on linocut printing workshop. Learn the basics of this modern printing technique while creating your own print. \n4pm Crip Camp Screening\nCrip Camp is a documentary that tells the story of Camp Jened\, a summer camp for people with disabilities\, and the role the camp played in spurring the 1990 passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Learn more about this important piece of American and disabled history\, including the little-known role the Black Panther Party played in supporting disability advocates. \n5pm D/deaf & Hard-of-hearing Mixer\nPoster House is pleased to welcome New York City Black Deaf Advocates for a D/deaf and hard-of-hearing mixer. Join us at Café des Affiches to mix and mingle in a Deaf/hard-of-hearing affirming environment. Attendees receive 10% off in the café during the mixer. \nAccessibility: ASL interpreters & Tactile ASL Interpreters will be available. \n7pm Carrie Hawks Comedy Set\nFilmmaker\, artist\, and comedian\, Carrie Hawks will stop by Poster House for a hilariously off-beat comedy set. Hawks will recount the relief of their autism diagnosis\, delve into the mysteries of bathroom lines\, tell tales about eating compliment sandwiches\, and probably say a thing or two about snails. \n7:15pm Stella Rise Performance\nPoster House is pleased to welcome Stella Rise\, New York City’s premiere disabled drag queen\, to the museum for a special performance! Bring your dollar bills and your enthusiasm for this one-of-a-kind drag performance.

SUMMARY:Waves of Wonder: A Play About Water and our World
DESCRIPTION:Set sail with Emit Theatre and a brand-new TYA production\, Waves of Wonder: A Play About Water and Our World. \nFree public performances will take place on Saturday\, June 24 at Carl Schurz Park (Peter Pan Circle near 87th St) and Sunday\, June 25 at bkONE’s Tom Kane Theatre (51 35th Street Bldg. 5\, Brooklyn\, off the D\, N and R trains). A pre-show craft will begin at 1 pm with a 1:30 pm showtime. In line with Emit’s mission to make theatre accessible to the community\, performances are free/by donation with a suggested donation of $15. \nWaves of Wonder is an interactive play for young audiences that takes students on a journey to help save their town’s waterfront from harmful development. Along the way\, they encounter mythical creatures who teach them about the importance of conservation and community. Devised by the company\, it features traditional Afro-Caribbean\, Nigerian\, Chinese\, Scottish\, and Gullah mythology. \nBoth show locations are ADA-accessible. Additional accessibility accommodations will include handheld fans\, shade umbrellas\, fidget spinners\, noise-canceling headphones\, and ice packs. Crafted for ages 3-8.
