Registrants receive a visual schedule and vocabulary and a digital at-home activity packet. \nFood is an important part of any travel experience. This program will take place over Zoom and include at-home activity packets.

A delightful wordless comedy for all ages created by Madagascar’s La Compagnie Zolobe\, Sakasaka will add joy to everyone’s day. In the great tradition of slapstick comedians like The Three Stooges\, La Compagnie Zolobe’s clown trio uses physical comedy and body language to tell their story while remaining completely silent. They are accompanied by a musician who plays traditional instruments: kabosy (a rectangular guitar) and djembe (drum). The word sakasaka means “thirsty” in Malagasy and\, using just a mop\, bucket and a few bottles of water\, the clowns take audiences on hilarious adventures that gently and sincerely explore the preciousness of water. Laugh out loud and learn important lessons as you go on a journey of dance\, music\, splashes\, and joy!

SUMMARY:First Friday: Alt Text As Poetry Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Posters are a visual medium. How can they be made more accessible to the blind and low vision community? Poster House is thrilled to welcome Finnegan Shannon (they/them) and Bojana Coklyat (she/her) as they lead visitors through a workshop on how to reframe alt text (short\, written descriptions of images) as a type of poetry. Inspired by posters from the museum’s collection\, visitors will practice writing\, discussing\, and reframing this type of accessible writing. To learn more about this larger project\, visit the Alt Text as Poetry website. \nAccessibility Notes: \nAn ASL interpreter and assistive listening devices will be provided. Seating will include stools and chairs. Designed by 2023 Poet-in-Residence Ama Codjoe\, this convening of discussion and exchange will illuminate poetry’s role in enabling humans to imagine\, dream\, and craft the kind of language that precipitates political action\, communal nurturing\, and social change. \n\n \n\nNovember 10 \n\n\nPoetry Is Not a Luxury Day 1: Poetic Freedom \n\n\n5-6:30pm ET (Virtual) \nLink to event page \n\n\nThis first day of the Poetry Is Not a Luxury program\, entitled Poetic Freedom\, will feature a live taping of the Poetry Foundation’s VS podcast with co-hosts Ajanaé Dawkins and Brittany Rogers and guests Arisa White and LaTasha N. DESCRIPTION:Gospel\, funk\, soul\, and Afrobeat come together in this joyful presentation of Rodgers and Hammerstein songs as viewed through a utopian\, afrofuturistic lens. The Sound of (Black) Music is a vibrant one-act concert reimagining of the classic musical\, featuring songs such as “Do-Re-Mi\,” “Edelweiss\,” and “Climb Ev’ry Mountain\,” all recast through a Black Roots music kaleidoscope. Created for 20 musicians and vocalists curated by Michael Mwenso and Jono Gasparro\, in association with Electric Root\, co-directed by Shariffa Ali and Kamilah Long with arrangements by Mathis Picard and music direction by Charenee Wade\, the concert channels the singular musical gifts of some of today’s most talented Black musicians into an overflowing celebration of Black Roots music. DESCRIPTION:Join Poster House on the First Friday of every month for free admission and extended hours! Explore the museum’s latest exhibitions and get in on the fun by attending a tour\, workshop\, performance\, or activity throughout the day. Every First Friday is different\, offering unique opportunities to engage with rotating exhibitions and the permanent collection. This month\, our education team is taking over First Friday to  highlight the museum’s education offerings. \nPoster House is thrilled to welcome Lorenzo Van Ness (they/them/elle) from Sins Invalid for a screening and discussion of Loving with Three Hearts. After the viewing\, there will be a discussion on the intersection of climate justice and disability justice. Special attention will be paid to how Sins Invalid utilizes performance to explore these connections. \nPlease note that while Poster House is mask-optional\, this event is mask-mandatory. SUMMARY:The Dignity of Our Breathing: A Disability Pride Month Poetry Reading
DESCRIPTION:This Disability Pride Month\, join us for a poetry reading facilitated by Joselia Hughes featuring poets Kay Ulanday Barrett\, Dan Schapiro\, and Jackie Torres\, and in conjunction with the thirty-third anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Hughes framed this poetry reading with this invitation:  \n  \nLet’s be potent and clear: it is summer 2023\, the covid-19 pandemic rages\, neglect from the status quo proliferates\, many of our comrades have died\, many more of our communities are dying and becoming increasingly debilitated. It is July which means it is Disability Pride Month. In the face of unwavering violence\, Pride is a complicating energy to hold. It is neither just the appreciation of progress nor an acknowledgement of one’s efforts. Pride is a collective rally into the necessity of and our presence to dignity—in living\, in death\, in sorrow\, in celebration. The dignity of ourselves as individuals within a network of many. The dignity of our breathing. The dignity of our struggle. The dignity of our being here now\, our being there then\, our will to be again. In a small chorus\, Dan Schapiro\, Jackie Torres\, and Kay Ulanday Barrett will offer  up songs\, chants\, memories\, directives\, considerations\, dreams\, and much more on how we can continue our mission of dignified life for all of us.  \n  \nThis event will take place on Zoom and will be accompanied by an cozy in-person viewing in the Susan and John Hess Family Theater for folks who wish to convene in person. This event will have ASL interpretation\, CART captioning\, and a low-stimulus sensory environment.
