SUMMARY:Reading Group: On Body Constructs with Aimi Hamraie
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with the installation Body Constructs\, this reading group will be led by designer\, researcher\, and disability justice organizer Aimi Hamraie. We will consider new perspectives and think together through close reading of short texts with the goal of opening new ways of thinking about the creative tensions between identity\, disability\, access\, race\, and modern architecture. No prior preparation or background is necessary to participate. We will read texts together during the session and you will receive access to full texts after the session. This program is free\, open to all\, requires preregistration\, and takes place online via Zoom. \nThis session is part of our ongoing Reading Group series. Our intention is to create space for people to gather to consider a range of perspectives and think critically through a guided reading of key texts that can help illuminate new ways of looking at artwork on view in MoMA’s galleries. Our priority is to create a space that is comfortable enough for participants to take risks with their thinking and possibly find a sense of fellowship\, community\, and camaraderie with the facilitator and their fellow readers. \nFacilitator \nAimi Hamraie directs the Critical Design Lab\, a multidisciplinary and international collaborative of disabled artists\, designers\, and design researchers. They are a 2022 United States Artists Fellow and host of the Contra* podcast on disability design justice. With Cassandra Hartblay and Jarah Moesch\, Hamraie co-curated #CripRitual\, a multi-site exhibition of work by 25 disabled artists at the Tangled Arts and Disability and Doris McCarthy Galleries in Toronto. Hamraie’s creative practice spans social practice and design (wood\, leather\, textiles\, architecture\, and landscapes). Families can join a guided virtual experience and participate in activities that everyone can enjoy. Registrants receive a visual schedule and vocabulary and a digital at-home activity packet. \nAll is not what it seems! Test your observation skills during this interactive program for all ages with educators from the Intrepid Museum and the International Spy Museum (Washington\, DC). Registrants receive a visual schedule and vocabulary and a digital at-home activity packet. \nFood is an important part of any travel experience. Learn about the food served on Intrepid\, British Airways Concorde\, and NASA Space Shuttles and how they were prepared. Decide for yourself which is the tastiest! This program will take place over Zoom and include at-home activity packets.

In the great tradition of slapstick comedians like The Three Stooges\, La Compagnie Zolobe’s clown trio uses physical comedy and body language to tell their story while remaining completely silent. They are accompanied by a musician who plays traditional instruments: kabosy (a rectangular guitar) and djembe (drum). The word sakasaka means “thirsty” in Malagasy and\, using just a mop\, bucket and a few bottles of water\, the clowns take audiences on hilarious adventures that gently and sincerely explore the preciousness of water. Laugh out loud and learn important lessons as you go on a journey of dance\, music\, splashes\, and joy!

SUMMARY:First Friday: Alt Text As Poetry Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Posters are a visual medium. How can they be made more accessible to the blind and low vision community? Poster House is thrilled to welcome Finnegan Shannon (they/them) and Bojana Coklyat (she/her) as they lead visitors through a workshop on how to reframe alt text (short\, written descriptions of images) as a type of poetry. Inspired by posters from the museum’s collection\, visitors will practice writing\, discussing\, and reframing this type of accessible writing. To learn more about this larger project\, visit the Alt Text as Poetry website. \nAccessibility Notes: \nAn ASL interpreter and assistive listening devices will be provided. Seating will include stools and chairs.
