They are playful and eager for attention. \nSince 1991\, Close-Act Theatre from The Netherlands (founded by Hesther Melief and Tonny Aerts)\, has specialized in large-scale\, interactive street theater for everyone. The company’s unique form of elevated performance is performed in\, between\, and above the public. Close-Act’s creations have been performed around the globe. DESCRIPTION:Please note that masking is mandatory for this performance. \nVisual Description: Alice Sheppard and Laurel Lawson curl into themselves on the floor of a black studio. Alice lies back to the floor\, legs and torso cradling Laurel who is lying on Alice’s belly and curling into a tight ball. Their eyes are closed and they are embracing a gentle moment. Alice Sheppard and Laurel Lawson from Kinetic Light will be presenting a work-in-progress excerpt from their newest dance work\, The Next T.i.M.es\, and additional Kinetic Light works. \nWorking in the disciplines of art\, technology\, design\, and dance\, Kinetic Light creates\, performs\, and teaches at the nexus of access\, queerness\, disability\, dance\, and race. The company is led by disabled artists; disabled artists create\, design\, and perform the work. A Bessie award-winning choreographer\, Sheppard creates movement that challenges conventional understandings of disabled and dancing bodies. \nLaurel Lawson (flexible pronouns) is a choreographic collaborator\, dancer\, designer\, and engineer with Kinetic Light. She is the primary costume and makeup designer and designs the wheelchairs that she and Alice use in performance. Laurel is also the product designer and lead for access\, software\, and access curriculum initiatives\, including Kinetic Light’s signature program Access ALLways.

DESCRIPTION:The Anatomy of a Movie Poster: The Work of Dawn Baillie includes some of the most iconic and beloved posters in modern cinematic history. Throughout the exhibition\, Poster House will screen a selection of films from the movie-focused exhibition. This First Friday\, guests will enjoy a free screening to Barbie with ASL interpretation and audio description. \nJoin us at 4:30pm for a Barbie-themed cocktail and snacks at Café des Affiches. SUMMARY:Reading Group: On Body Constructs with Aimi Hamraie
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with the installation Body Constructs\, this reading group will be led by designer\, researcher\, and disability justice organizer Aimi Hamraie. We will consider new perspectives and think together through close reading of short texts with the goal of opening new ways of thinking about the creative tensions between identity\, disability\, access\, race\, and modern architecture. No prior preparation or background is necessary to participate. We will read texts together during the session and you will receive access to full texts after the session. This program is free\, open to all\, requires preregistration\, and takes place online via Zoom. \nThis session is part of our ongoing Reading Group series. Our intention is to create space for people to gather to consider a range of perspectives and think critically through a guided reading of key texts that can help illuminate new ways of looking at artwork on view in MoMA’s galleries. Our priority is to create a space that is comfortable enough for participants to take risks with their thinking and possibly find a sense of fellowship\, community\, and camaraderie with the facilitator and their fellow readers. \nFacilitator \nAimi Hamraie directs the Critical Design Lab\, a multidisciplinary and international collaborative of disabled artists\, designers\, and design researchers. They are a 2022 United States Artists Fellow and host of the Contra* podcast on disability design justice. With Cassandra Hartblay and Jarah Moesch\, Hamraie co-curated #CripRitual\, a multi-site exhibition of work by 25 disabled artists at the Tangled Arts and Disability and Doris McCarthy Galleries in Toronto. Hamraie’s creative practice spans social practice and design (wood\, leather\, textiles\, architecture\, and landscapes). Their intellectual and creative work is funded by the National Science Foundation\, the Social Science Research Council\, the Smithsonian Institution\, the Mellon Foundation\, the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Arts\, and the National Humanities Alliance. \nRegistration\nRegister for this online Reading Group on Thursday\, April 4\, 2024\, at 6:00 p.m. ET. \nAccessibility \n \nThere will be verbal descriptions for all images. We will consider new perspectives and think together through close reading of short texts with the goal of opening new ways of thinking about the creative tensions between identity\, disability\, access\, race\, and modern architecture. No prior preparation or background is necessary to participate. We will read texts together during the session and you will receive access to full texts after the session. This program is free\, open to all\, requires preregistration\, and takes place online via Zoom. \nThis session is part of our ongoing Reading Group series. Our intention is to create space for people to gather to consider a range of perspectives and think critically through a guided reading of key texts that can help illuminate new ways of looking at artwork on view in MoMA’s galleries. Our priority is to create a space that is comfortable enough for participants to take risks with their thinking and possibly find a sense of fellowship\, community\, and camaraderie with the facilitator and their fellow readers. \nFacilitator \nAimi Hamraie directs the Critical Design Lab\, a multidisciplinary and international collaborative of disabled artists\, designers\, and design researchers. They are a 2022 United States Artists Fellow and host of the Contra* podcast on disability design justice. With Cassandra Hartblay and Jarah Moesch\, Hamraie co-curated #CripRitual\, a multi-site exhibition of work by 25 disabled artists at the Tangled Arts and Disability and Doris McCarthy Galleries in Toronto. Hamraie’s creative practice spans social practice and design (wood\, leather\, textiles\, architecture\, and landscapes). Their intellectual and creative work is funded by the National Science Foundation\, the Social Science Research Council\, the Smithsonian Institution\, the Mellon Foundation\, the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Arts\, and the National Humanities Alliance. \nRegistration\nRegister for this online Reading Group on Thursday\, April 4\, 2024\, at 6:00 p.m. ET. \nAccessibility \n \nThere will be verbal descriptions for all images.
