Join Poster House Accessibility Coordinator Sarit Cahana in conversation with Kirsten Sweeny\, Accessibility & Inclusion Manager at Cooper Hewitt\, Smithsonian Design Museum for an engaging conversation on the important relationship between disability pride and disability justice. Questions strongly encouraged! \n2pm Woodblock Inspired Printing Workshop\nInspired by the ukiyo-e tradition featured in the acclaimed exhibition Made in Japan: 20th-Century Poster Art\, join artist and educator Sato Yamamoto for a hands-on linocut printing workshop. Learn the basics of this modern printing technique while creating your own print. \n4pm Crip Camp Screening\nCrip Camp is a documentary that tells the story of Camp Jened\, a summer camp for people with disabilities\, and the role the camp played in spurring the 1990 passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Learn more about this important piece of American and disabled history\, including the little-known role the Black Panther Party played in supporting disability advocates. \n5pm D/deaf & Hard-of-hearing Mixer\nPoster House is pleased to welcome New York City Black Deaf Advocates for a D/deaf and hard-of-hearing mixer. Join us at Café des Affiches to mix and mingle in a Deaf/hard-of-hearing affirming environment. Attendees receive 10% off in the café during the mixer. \nAccessibility: ASL interpreters & Tactile ASL Interpreters will be available. \n7pm Carrie Hawks Comedy Set\nFilmmaker\, artist\, and comedian\, Carrie Hawks will stop by Poster House for a hilariously off-beat comedy set. Hawks will recount the relief of their autism diagnosis\, delve into the mysteries of bathroom lines\, tell tales about eating compliment sandwiches\, and probably say a thing or two about snails. \n7:15pm Stella Rise Performance\nPoster House is pleased to welcome Stella Rise\, New York City’s premiere disabled drag queen\, to the museum for a special performance! Bring your dollar bills and your enthusiasm for this one-of-a-kind drag performance.

SUMMARY:Disability Pride at NYBG
DESCRIPTION:Join us July 22 as we celebrate the history and contributions of people with disabilities to the botanical world—past and present—as we offer multi-sensory plant activities for all ages\, a live performance from Heidi Latsky Dance\, and tours. \n12–3 p.m.\, Vanishing Art Featuring Heidi Latsky Dance\, Performing ON DISPLAY\, this endurance performance attempts to end the stigma attached to difference by featuring many performers with disabilities. Heidi Latsky Dance is an NYC-based\, physically integrated company\, creating daring work with people with disabilities since 2006. \n\n12–3 p.m.\, Multi-Sensory Table\, Join us to explore plants and their products from the Garden’s collections through this tabletop multi-sensory experience.  \n\n2:30 p.m.\, ASL Magnificent Tree Tour\, What makes a tree notable? It could be its size\, bark\, uses\, or a variety of other features. Some of our trees have been here prior to the Garden’s formal establishment in 1891. This tour\, led by an NYBG Tour Guide accompanied by an American Sign Language interpreter\, gives visitors who are deaf an enhanced experience. \n\nThroughout July; 10 a.m.–5:30 p.m.\, Children’s Sensory Experience\, Everett Children’s Adventure Garden\, Explore our sensory-friendly Peacock and Vulture sculptures in the Children’s Garden in celebration of Ebony G. Patterson’s art\, created with sambals and feather dusters for hands-on interaction. Then visit the Greenhouse for a quiet space to see plants and use spray bottles to help with watering.

SUMMARY:Silent Disco: Cultivating Access Ecologies Closing Party
DESCRIPTION:Building with what we have discovered in the Cultivating Access Ecologies series\, this Closing Party acts as a beautiful experiment about what it means to share space\, ideas\, joys\, and dilemmas. We will experience access as a set of possibilities and invitations. We will dance with Silent Disco headphones\, vibro-tactile suits\, alongside ASL song-signers\, poetic captions\, descriptions of many kinds\, and more. This event will feature DJ Nico DiMarco and disabled artists activating our inventory of tools for building with access. \nThis workshop will take place both in-person at Lincoln Center and remotely. SUMMARY:The Dignity of Our Breathing: A Disability Pride Month Poetry Reading
DESCRIPTION:This Disability Pride Month\, join us for a poetry reading facilitated by Joselia Hughes featuring poets Kay Ulanday Barrett\, Dan Schapiro\, and Jackie Torres\, and in conjunction with the thirty-third anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Hughes framed this poetry reading with this invitation:  \n  \nLet’s be potent and clear: it is summer 2023\, the covid-19 pandemic rages\, neglect from the status quo proliferates\, many of our comrades have died\, many more of our communities are dying and becoming increasingly debilitated. It is July which means it is Disability Pride Month. In the face of unwavering violence\, Pride is a complicating energy to hold. It is neither just the appreciation of progress nor an acknowledgement of one’s efforts. Pride is a collective rally into the necessity of and our presence to dignity—in living\, in death\, in sorrow\, in celebration. The dignity of ourselves as individuals within a network of many. The dignity of our breathing. The dignity of our struggle. The dignity of our being here now\, our being there then\, our will to be again. In a small chorus\, Dan Schapiro\, Jackie Torres\, and Kay Ulanday Barrett will offer  up songs\, chants\, memories\, directives\, considerations\, dreams\, and much more on how we can continue our mission of dignified life for all of us.  \n  \nThis event will take place on Zoom and will be accompanied by an cozy in-person viewing in the Susan and John Hess Family Theater for folks who wish to convene in person. This event will have ASL interpretation\, CART captioning\, and a low-stimulus sensory environment.
