SUMMARY:Passing the Crown Featuring MC Lyte
DESCRIPTION:Passing the Crown takes center stage once more in this unforgettable live orchestral mixtape and dance experience\, featuring Hip-Hop icon MC Lyte—one of Hip-Hop’s most legendary Queens and a multiple Gold Record recording artist—with a special appearance by GRAMMY Award-winning artist Rapsody\, and DJ Perly\, the first woman to win the DMC USA DJ Championship and the only woman to claim the title twice. \nPerly kicks off the night with a high-energy opening set\, elevating Passing the Crown’s orchestral mixtape with the turntablism\, precision\, and energy that made her a two-time national champion. Honored as the “Undisputed Queen of the 1’s & 2’s” by Hip-Hop pioneers Grandmaster Caz and Melle Mel\, and a proud member of the Heavy Hitters DJ Crew\, Perly seamlessly blends Hip-Hop classics with the artistry of our all-female and gender-expansive ensemble. \nOriginally commissioned as part of Lincoln Center’s Summer for the City festival\, this groundbreaking production blends cinematic orchestration\, DJing\, breaking\, and powerful freestyling\, all driven by an all-female and gender-expansive collective of award-winning artists. Conceived and executive produced by violinist and composer Juliette Jones\, and creatively led by associate producer Monique Brooks Roberts and Emmy Award-winning choreographer Randi “Rascal” Freitas\, Passing the Crown reimagines the canon of Hip-Hop through the lens of orchestral grandeur and raw street energy—celebrating the visionary women who laid the foundation and continue to shape the genre. \nStyled by legendary streetwear designer April Walker of Walker Wear and her The Future Been Female imprint\, Passing the Crown is more than a concert—it’s a movement that honors legacy\, uplifts community\, and ignites the future. Join us for this history-making night of rhythm and royalty. The crown isn’t just passed—it’s celebrated.

SUMMARY:Robert Glasper + Alain Pérez
DESCRIPTION:This can’t-miss opening night of Lincoln Center’s Summer for the City features two performances from major contemporary superstars\, offering a vision of a spectacularly full musical future defined by genius and limitless possibility. Over an already storied 20-year career\, the multiple GRAMMY Award-winning producer\, composer\, pianist\, and culture creator Robert Glasper has seamlessly reintegrated the intersecting spirits of modern jazz\, R&B\, and Hip-Hop. Glasper’s Black Radio album project ushered in a generation of listeners for whom genre means far less than musicality. Next to hit the stage is Cuban bassist and polymath musician Alain Pérez\, who joins us as part of his Bingo summer tour. The Latin GRAMMY Award winner\, Alain Pérez & La Orquesta\, has earned an international reputation as a creative innovator whose Latin roots provide a foundation for bold expression and expansion.

SUMMARY:Steel Pulse
DESCRIPTION:T \nhe songs of the GRAMMY Award-winning roots reggae ensemble Steel Pulse helped to popularize the reggae diaspora across the US and Europe. Their continually electrifying live performances on stages around the globe have kept Steel Pulse’s legacy alive for the next generation of artists and audiences. As part of Lincoln Center’s celebration of Jamaica Day\, a jubilation of the island nation’s culture and history\, Steel Pulse will perform a full-length concert\, featuring founding members David Hinds and Selwyn Brown and tracks from the band’s formidable catalog. \nRun time: approximately 1 hour 45 minutes \nIf you have any questions about this event\, please contact Guest Experience at 212-875-5456 or guestexperience@lincolncenter.org. \nLive captioning available on personal devices by scanning a QR code.

SUMMARY:Once on This Island: In American Sign Language by Deaf Broadway
DESCRIPTION:In just four short years\, Deaf Broadway has become synonymous with authentically Deaf musical theater. Founded during the pandemic in response to artistic director Garrett Zuercher’s experience as a profoundly Deaf person frustrated with the state of access to performances of lyrically complex musicals\, which often watered down the nuances of the original language and intentions. Taking up the gauntlet\, he and his team began producing American Sign Language interfaces to pre-existing recordings of popular musicals\, simultaneously presenting the original music alongside a live cast of trained Deaf actors\, all performing their individual parts in American Sign Language. This live staging of the beloved Broadway musical by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty offers a more fully equitable shared evening for hearing and Deaf audiences alike\, with a full Deaf Broadway cast interpreting the music in person. Their latest performance was a smash staging of Jonathan Larson’s RENT this spring as part of Lincoln Center’s American Songbook series. \nIf you have any questions about this event\, please contact Guest Experience at 212-875-5456 or guestexperience@lincolncenter.org. \n\n\n\nPerformance in American Sign Language and Open Captioning available.
