SUMMARY:Toshi Reagon's Songs of the Living: Freedom Songs
DESCRIPTION:Over the past several years\, the ever-expansive singer-songwriter Toshi Reagon has explored questions of fellowship and activism with Lincoln Center programs that have united professional singers with audience members through shared performance\, most notably in her innovative and participatory opera based on the work of author Octavia Butler\, The Parable of the Sower. Reagon’s program this year is a continuation of her Songs of the Living Community Choir project\, and the Parable Path. This iteration of Songs of the Living is centered on freedom songs: drawing from 200 years of Black Music in collaboration with music across the global African Diaspora. This Juneteenth concert will be rooted in music Toshi learned as a child growing up during the Southern Freedom Movement which expanded into the 20th century American Civil Rights Movement and other revolutions in international human history. Reagon’s multitudinous and intergenerational choir is supported by her band BIGLovely and joined by an array of special guests to be announced. SUMMARY:Some Sing: A Juneteenth Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Any cultural historian will tell you that blues\, jazz\, rock\, R&B\, Hip-Hop\, zydeco\, and country can all trace their roots back to Black innovators\, making the history of popular music in America and Black music in America inextricably bound. This truth is at the heart of historian\, artist\, and curator Carl Hancock Rux’s 2024 Juneteenth Celebration at Lincoln Center\, a campus-wide jubilee of Black sound in all its vernacular and complex manifestations. Rux’s vision acknowledges how music unites a people and acts as an agent for growth and freedom\, referencing the uses of the art in work songs\, prison laments\, spirituals\, and commemorations. Master printer and publisher Jacob Samuel has brought etchings—prints created by transferring ink from a metal plate to paper—into the 21st century through collaborations with more than 60 contemporary artists. Together we will learn about the flexibility of etching and its reinvention for a contemporary world through Samuel’s printmaking tools and processes. \nInterpreting MoMA is offered free of charge. In the great tradition of slapstick comedians like The Three Stooges\, La Compagnie Zolobe’s clown trio uses physical comedy and body language to tell their story while remaining completely silent. They are accompanied by a musician who plays traditional instruments: kabosy (a rectangular guitar) and djembe (drum). The word sakasaka means “thirsty” in Malagasy and\, using just a mop\, bucket and a few bottles of water\, the clowns take audiences on hilarious adventures that gently and sincerely explore the preciousness of water. Laugh out loud and learn important lessons as you go on a journey of dance\, music\, splashes\, and joy!

SUMMARY:First Friday: Alt Text As Poetry Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Posters are a visual medium. How can they be made more accessible to the blind and low vision community? Poster House is thrilled to welcome Finnegan Shannon (they/them) and Bojana Coklyat (she/her) as they lead visitors through a workshop on how to reframe alt text (short\, written descriptions of images) as a type of poetry. Inspired by posters from the museum’s collection\, visitors will practice writing\, discussing\, and reframing this type of accessible writing. To learn more about this larger project\, visit the Alt Text as Poetry website. \nAccessibility Notes: \nAn ASL interpreter and assistive listening devices will be provided. Seating will include stools and chairs. SUMMARY:La Banda Chuska
DESCRIPTION:La Banda Chuska merges the sounds of vintage Peruvian cumbia and psychedelic chicha with 1960s Latin American and Middle Eastern surf rock. They then add a dose of the surreal intensity of New York City to amplify their diverse musical and cultural backgrounds: Peru\, Argentina\, Puerto Rico\, and various corners of the U.S. The result is a fireball of post-punk energy and subversive playfulness\, a sort of tropical funk meets The B-52s. La Banda Chuska’s self-titled EP is a darkly cinematic\, musically expansive\, and eminently danceable weirdo party on wax that’s whipped up the fanbase they attract at regular performances at Brooklyn’s Barbés and other NYC music mainstays. For their Lincoln Center debut\, they’ll play songs from their first EP and introduce new cuts from their forthcoming LP.
