SUMMARY:Brasil Summerfest With Gilsons
DESCRIPTION:Presented in association with Brasil Summerfest \nFor the past 13 years\, Brasil Summerfest has brought the music and flavor of Brazil to New York City with an array of audio\, arts\, and special events that highlight the beauty and diversity of South America’s biggest exporter of cultural excellence. Brazilian Music Award-winning trio Gilsons are a family band of the highest pedigree. Francisco\, João\, and José Gil are respectively the sons and grandsons of the legendary Gilberto Gil. The band blends pop rock\, samba\, rap and Bahian rhythms\, but draws particular inspiration from MPB\, Gilberto’s chief métier. Following a strong run of singles\, including the hits “Várias Queixas\,” and “Devagarinho”\, the band released their debut album\, Pra Gente Acordar\, which was subsequently nominated for the Latin GRAMMY for Best Contemporary Pop Album in Portuguese. DESCRIPTION:Enjoy the culmination of a months-long collaborative effort with Brooklyn Public Library to create a contemporary anthem echoing our collective hopes\, struggles\, and histories. Paying homage to the anthem genre\, Anthem to US has invited applicants to take part in an immersive three-part writing workshop series guided by notable instructors. Three participants have advanced to collaborate with expert composers Jaime Lozano\, Damien L. Sneed\, Martha Redbone & Aaron Whitby to craft a finished piece. At the July 6 concert at Damrosch Park\, you can experience the final three world premiere anthems live; and out of those three\, a slate of luminaries including Laurie Anderson and Sandra Cisneros will review and select one winning anthem. \nThis concert also features beloved songs that have served as anthems of hope\, peace\, protest\, and resilience in many moments of history\, including “Lift Every Voice and Sing”\, also known as “the Black National Anthem”\, Sam Cooke’s civil-rights era classic “A Change Is Gonna Come”\, and “We Shall Overcome”\, a song that has united generations in the struggle for equality and justice. Alice Sheppard and Laurel Lawson from Kinetic Light will be presenting a work-in-progress excerpt from their newest dance work\, The Next T.i.M.es\, and additional Kinetic Light works. \nWorking in the disciplines of art\, technology\, design\, and dance\, Kinetic Light creates\, performs\, and teaches at the nexus of access\, queerness\, disability\, dance\, and race. She is the primary costume and makeup designer and designs the wheelchairs that she and Alice use in performance. Laurel is also the product designer and lead for access\, software\, and access curriculum initiatives\, including Kinetic Light’s signature program Access ALLways.
