DESCRIPTION:Join the Rubin’s community of caregivers for a free\, in-person program of art and connection. Guided by art in the collection\, Rubin docents and staff lead close-looking\, creative exercises\, and engaging discussion in the galleries. The program begins with a tour and conversation\, exploring how contemporary and traditional Buddhist artworks can inspire new perspectives and pathways to empowerment. Participants are invited to explore the power dynamics in their own lives and open their minds to a different understanding of their own agency. We also examine concepts of interdependence and fluidity by listening to the stories and teachings of historical Buddhist figures. DESCRIPTION:Gospel\, funk\, soul\, and Afrobeat come together in this joyful presentation of Rodgers and Hammerstein songs as viewed through a utopian\, afrofuturistic lens. The Sound of (Black) Music is a vibrant one-act concert reimagining of the classic musical\, featuring songs such as “Do-Re-Mi\,” “Edelweiss\,” and “Climb Ev’ry Mountain\,” all recast through a Black Roots music kaleidoscope. Created for 20 musicians and vocalists curated by Michael Mwenso and Jono Gasparro\, in association with Electric Root\, co-directed by Shariffa Ali and Kamilah Long with arrangements by Mathis Picard and music direction by Charenee Wade\, the concert channels the singular musical gifts of some of today’s most talented Black musicians into an overflowing celebration of Black Roots music. In addition to audiences impacted by dementia\, these performances are also open to adults with developmental disabilities. \nPerformances at 1:00 pm are followed by an hour-long workshop specially designed for audiences impacted by dementia—facilitated by educators and music therapists that explore the work through discussion\, movement\, music\, and art-making. \nThis event is part of Lincoln Center Moments.
