DESCRIPTION:The Guggenheim welcomes visitors from the D/deaf community for an in-person American Sign Language (ASL) tour on Sunday\, November 17\, from 6:00 to 8:30 pm. Join us at the museum to explore the exhibition Harmony and Dissonance: Orphism in Paris\, 1910-1930. \nThis after-hours program will be led by educator Joyce Hom. We’ll begin with a tour of the galleries followed by a light reception and art-making activities in the education center. \nDesigned for the D/deaf community\, the tour is in ASL only without voice interpretation. Due to limited capacity\, we cannot accommodate ASL students at this time. \nFree\, but space is limited. SUMMARY:Once on This Island: In American Sign Language by Deaf Broadway
DESCRIPTION:In just four short years\, Deaf Broadway has become synonymous with authentically Deaf musical theater. Founded during the pandemic in response to artistic director Garrett Zuercher’s experience as a profoundly Deaf person frustrated with the state of access to performances of lyrically complex musicals\, which often watered down the nuances of the original language and intentions. Taking up the gauntlet\, he and his team began producing American Sign Language interfaces to pre-existing recordings of popular musicals\, simultaneously presenting the original music alongside a live cast of trained Deaf actors\, all performing their individual parts in American Sign Language. This live staging of the beloved Broadway musical by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty offers a more fully equitable shared evening for hearing and Deaf audiences alike\, with a full Deaf Broadway cast interpreting the music in person. DESCRIPTION:Free Fridays are back! The Intrepid Museum is once again extending its hours free of charge on Friday\, July 26 from 5:00pm – 9:00pm. Don’t miss special programming during Free Fridays\, including the Museum’s popular Summer Movie Series and Astronomy Night\, part of the Astro Live Series. \nIn connection with the Museum’s newest exhibition: Apollo: When We Went to the Moon\, all of the movies this summer will feature stories about humankind’s exploration and fascination with the Moon. During this movie night\, enjoy views of the Hudson River and city skyline while screening the film First Man on the flight deck. DESCRIPTION:In 2001\, Lincoln Center set the scene for the first La Casita\, a citywide\, intentionally-inclusive festival celebrating poetry and music\, grounded in the principle that New York City is best represented by presenting the artistic traditions of its most underserved communities. This year\, La Casita’s curators have assembled a stellar cast of poets and musicians around the themes of lineage and heritage\, mining tradition and bloodline through the lens of provenance. This year’s line up\, hosted by 2012 Women of the World Poetry Slam Champion Eboni Hogan\, includes reading from Bronx-born “lingualisualist” Edwin Torres\, Latinx educator and “artivist” Jessica Diaz\, poet and playwright Nancy Mercado\, and cultural organizer and author Sonia Guiñansaca.
