SUMMARY:Sound/Off: An Evening of Poetry at the Guggenheim
DESCRIPTION:This special evening program celebrates the artistry of poetry: written\, spoken\, and signed. In Sound/Off\, Deaf and hard-of-hearing poets writing in English join Deaf and hard-of-hearing poets making poems in American Sign Language on stage in the Guggenheim’s iconic rotunda to honor the richness and malleability of language in different hands and on different tongues. Conceived of by the Guggenheim’s 2024 Poet-in-Residence Meg Day\, readers will be announced later this fall. This program will be fully interpreted in both spoken English and American Sign Language. \nThe program concludes with access to Day’s project Ekphrasis in Air featured on the sixth level of the museum’s rotunda as part of the installation Sixth Stanza\, and an exhibition viewing of Harmony and Dissonance: Orphism in Paris: 1910-1930. \n$10 general admission. The event (approx. 40 minutes) is designed to be experienced from various vantage points\, including the museum ramps\, which are standing room only. Limited seating will be reserved for those who require it. SUMMARY:Once on This Island: In American Sign Language by Deaf Broadway
DESCRIPTION:In just four short years\, Deaf Broadway has become synonymous with authentically Deaf musical theater. Founded during the pandemic in response to artistic director Garrett Zuercher’s experience as a profoundly Deaf person frustrated with the state of access to performances of lyrically complex musicals\, which often watered down the nuances of the original language and intentions. Taking up the gauntlet\, he and his team began producing American Sign Language interfaces to pre-existing recordings of popular musicals\, simultaneously presenting the original music alongside a live cast of trained Deaf actors\, all performing their individual parts in American Sign Language. This live staging of the beloved Broadway musical by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty offers a more fully equitable shared evening for hearing and Deaf audiences alike\, with a full Deaf Broadway cast interpreting the music in person. Alice lies back to the floor\, legs and torso cradling Laurel who is lying on Alice’s belly and curling into a tight ball. Their eyes are closed and they are embracing a gentle moment. Alice is a multiracial black woman with coffee-colored skin and short\, curly blonde hair. Laurel is a white person with short cut brown hair wearing laced ankle braces. Their metallic jumpsuits glint rainbows in the studio lighting. Photograph by Cherylynn Tsushima. \nJoin us for a disability arts performance in celebration of Disability Pride Month and July 26\, the day the Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law 34 years ago. Poster House is delighted to welcome the disability arts ensemble Kinetic Light. Alice Sheppard and Laurel Lawson from Kinetic Light will be presenting a work-in-progress excerpt from their newest dance work\, The Next T.i.M.es\, and additional Kinetic Light works. \nWorking in the disciplines of art\, technology\, design\, and dance\, Kinetic Light creates\, performs\, and teaches at the nexus of access\, queerness\, disability\, dance\, and race. The company is led by disabled artists; disabled artists create\, design\, and perform the work. Their work speaks to and emerges from disability aesthetics and disability culture\, and it is connected to the rich traditions and exciting contemporary conversations of disabled artists in all artistic fields. \nAccessibility Note: This performance is expected to include ASL Interpretation from a Deaf Interpreter/Hearing Interpreter team\, Assistive Listening Devices\, audio description\, fidgets\, earplugs\, expanded accessible seating including wheelchair and companion seating\, chairs with backs\, and stools. \nPlease contact access@posterhouse.org or (914) 295-2387 to address any further accessibility needs. A Bessie award-winning choreographer\, Sheppard creates movement that challenges conventional understandings of disabled and dancing bodies. \nLaurel Lawson (flexible pronouns) is a choreographic collaborator\, dancer\, designer\, and engineer with Kinetic Light. She is the primary costume and makeup designer and designs the wheelchairs that she and Alice use in performance. Laurel is also the product designer and lead for access\, software\, and access curriculum initiatives\, including Kinetic Light’s signature program Access ALLways.
