SUMMARY:Once on This Island: In American Sign Language by Deaf Broadway
DESCRIPTION:In just four short years\, Deaf Broadway has become synonymous with authentically Deaf musical theater. Founded during the pandemic in response to artistic director Garrett Zuercher’s experience as a profoundly Deaf person frustrated with the state of access to performances of lyrically complex musicals\, which often watered down the nuances of the original language and intentions. Taking up the gauntlet\, he and his team began producing American Sign Language interfaces to pre-existing recordings of popular musicals\, simultaneously presenting the original music alongside a live cast of trained Deaf actors\, all performing their individual parts in American Sign Language. This live staging of the beloved Broadway musical by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty offers a more fully equitable shared evening for hearing and Deaf audiences alike\, with a full Deaf Broadway cast interpreting the music in person. DESCRIPTION:Presented in collaboration with Urban Bush Women’s 40th Anniversary \nCelebrating Urban Bush Women’s 40th Anniversary\, this performative workshop led by Urban Bush Women’s Founder Jawole Willa Jo Zollar is a fun\, fully participatory examination of history through the lens of African American social dances from 1955 through the ’70s. UBW uses dance as both message and medium to bring together diverse audiences through innovative choreography\, community collaboration\, and artistic leadership development\, working to create a more equitable balance of power in the dance world and beyond. SUMMARY:Free Friday Astronomy Night ASL Interpretation
DESCRIPTION:Free Fridays are back! The Intrepid Museum is once again extending its hours free of charge on Friday\, July 26 from 5:00pm – 9:00pm. Don’t miss special programming during Free Fridays\, including the Museum’s popular Summer Movie Series and Astronomy Night\, part of the Astro Live Series. \nIn connection with the Museum’s newest exhibition: Apollo: When We Went to the Moon\, all of the movies this summer will feature stories about humankind’s exploration and fascination with the Moon. During this movie night\, enjoy views of the Hudson River and city skyline while screening the film First Man on the flight deck. Guests are invited to bring lawn chairs\, picnic baskets and blankets to view the film outdoors\, free of charge\, on a huge inflatable screen on the flight deck. Movie will begin at sunset. \nAstronomy Nights are FREE and feature fun-filled and educational experiences for the whole family\, including talks from astronauts\, engineers\, and scientists and activities & demos led by Museum educators. \nFamilies and individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing can pre-register to receive priority entry to the Museum and a visual schedule of the night’s events.

DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with Hopkins Center for the Arts at Dartmouth \nThe Ritual of Breath is a transdisciplinary opera and creative act of resistance. Born from the vibrant collaboration between composer Jonathan Berger\, visual artist Enrico Riley and poet/librettist Vievee Francis\, the work responds to the murder of Eric Garner and the ongoing theft of Black life at the hands of the State. Music\, text\, projected visuals and movement interweave in a story centered on Garner’s daughter\, Erica. Uplifted by a 75-person choir of singers\, the project gathers us together as co-conspirers—to breathe and keep breathing any way we can. \nThe Ritual of Breath is more than an opera. It is an offering for the city\, coinciding with the 10-year commemoration of Garner’s death. Through community partnerships from Harlem to Staten Island\, we invite you to join in community activations and collective rituals of healing. DESCRIPTION:Enjoy the culmination of a months-long collaborative effort with Brooklyn Public Library to create a contemporary anthem echoing our collective hopes\, struggles\, and histories. Paying homage to the anthem genre\, Anthem to US has invited applicants to take part in an immersive three-part writing workshop series guided by notable instructors. Three participants have advanced to collaborate with expert composers Jaime Lozano\, Damien L. Sneed\, Martha Redbone & Aaron Whitby to craft a finished piece. At the July 6 concert at Damrosch Park\, you can experience the final three world premiere anthems live; and out of those three\, a slate of luminaries including Laurie Anderson and Sandra Cisneros will review and select one winning anthem. \nThis concert also features beloved songs that have served as anthems of hope\, peace\, protest\, and resilience in many moments of history\, including “Lift Every Voice and Sing”\, also known as “the Black National Anthem”\, Sam Cooke’s civil-rights era classic “A Change Is Gonna Come”\, and “We Shall Overcome”\, a song that has united generations in the struggle for equality and justice.
