DESCRIPTION:This year’s American Songbook celebrates the voices of women and nonbinary performers who have not only shaped the landscape of music\, but have also driven important conversations on gender\, identity\, and empowerment. Galvanized by a Sex Pistols concert\, the UK-born Marion Elliot adapted the sobriquet Poly Styrene\, formed a band and then promptly changed the history of rock by recording the seminal punk anthem Oh Bondage! Up Yours! Poly Styrene would only release one album in the 1970s\, but Germ Free Adolescents would prove to be one of the most influential LPs of its era. For this evening of music by and inspired by Poly Styrene and her band X-Ray Spex\, the American Songbook band—featuring Keyanna Hutchinson (guitar)\, Barbara Duncan (percussion)\, Flora Lucini (bass)\, and Elenna Canlas (keyboards and vocals)—will be joined by an array of musical luminaries\, all paying their respects to a true punk pioneer.

SUMMARY:Sound/Off: An Evening of Poetry at the Guggenheim
DESCRIPTION:This special evening program celebrates the artistry of poetry: written\, spoken\, and signed. In Sound/Off\, Deaf and hard-of-hearing poets writing in English join Deaf and hard-of-hearing poets making poems in American Sign Language on stage in the Guggenheim’s iconic rotunda to honor the richness and malleability of language in different hands and on different tongues. Conceived of by the Guggenheim’s 2024 Poet-in-Residence Meg Day\, readers will be announced later this fall. This program will be fully interpreted in both spoken English and American Sign Language. \nThe program concludes with access to Day’s project Ekphrasis in Air featured on the sixth level of the museum’s rotunda as part of the installation Sixth Stanza\, and an exhibition viewing of Harmony and Dissonance: Orphism in Paris: 1910-1930. \n$10 general admission. The event (approx. 40 minutes) is designed to be experienced from various vantage points\, including the museum ramps\, which are standing room only. Limited seating will be reserved for those who require it. For access needs\, email us at access@brooklynmuseum.org.\nFour contemporary artists\, whose works were recently added to the collection\, explore their practice in rapid-fire conversations with curators. \nDare Turner\, Curator of Indigenous Art\, begins the evening by moderating a discussion with Hayden Haynes and Samantha Jacobs about their collaborations. Jacobs is a Seneca artist of the Turtle Clan from the Cattaraugus Territory\, who is known for her beaded moccasins\, quillwork\, moose embroidery\, and caribou hair tufting. A citizen of the Seneca Nation and Deer Clan\, Haynes creates works of photography\, found objects\, and antler carvings that are dedicated to healing—an expression of Hodinöhsö:ni’ life today. \nPauline Vermare\, Phillip and Edith Leonian Curator of Photography\, speaks with photographer and director Diana Markosian\, whose approach to documentary storytelling expands the genre’s boundaries. \nCarmen Hermo\, former Associate Curator of the Center for Feminist Art\, speaks with Melissa Joseph\, whose work is on view in The Brooklyn Artists Exhibition. Gerald Cantor Auditorium\, 3rd Floor \n\nGet tickets\nJoin journalist Paola Ramos and filmmaker Paola Mendoza for a thought-provoking conversation on two of the nation’s most important and misunderstood communities: Latinos and immigrants. From the rise of authoritarian forces and anti-immigrant rhetoric to the spread of misinformation\, Ramos and Mendoza will touch on pressing issues facing American political and cultural life. In tandem with the release of their books SOLIS and Defectors\, the two authors reflect on how Latino and immigrant communities shape the nation. Together they will explore storytelling’s power to help us understand these issues and to inspire change. \nSOLIS\, Mendoza’s dystopian YA novel\, tells the tale of undocumented immigrants subjected to labor camps and a teen-led contingent that plots to liberate its community. Ramos’s new nonfiction book\, Defectors\, unravels the assumption that Democrats can rely on a monolithic Latino vote by sharing stories of Latino voters who have aligned with the conservative movement. \nTickets are $10 ($6 for Members) and include after-hours admission to the American Art galleries.
