SUMMARY:First Friday: Alt Text As Poetry Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Posters are a visual medium. How can they be made more accessible to the blind and low vision community? Poster House is thrilled to welcome Finnegan Shannon (they/them) and Bojana Coklyat (she/her) as they lead visitors through a workshop on how to reframe alt text (short\, written descriptions of images) as a type of poetry. Inspired by posters from the museum’s collection\, visitors will practice writing\, discussing\, and reframing this type of accessible writing. To learn more about this larger project\, visit the Alt Text as Poetry website. \nAccessibility Notes: \nAn ASL interpreter and assistive listening devices will be provided. Seating will include stools and chairs. SUMMARY:La Banda Chuska
DESCRIPTION:La Banda Chuska merges the sounds of vintage Peruvian cumbia and psychedelic chicha with 1960s Latin American and Middle Eastern surf rock. They then add a dose of the surreal intensity of New York City to amplify their diverse musical and cultural backgrounds: Peru\, Argentina\, Puerto Rico\, and various corners of the U.S. The result is a fireball of post-punk energy and subversive playfulness\, a sort of tropical funk meets The B-52s. La Banda Chuska’s self-titled EP is a darkly cinematic\, musically expansive\, and eminently danceable weirdo party on wax that’s whipped up the fanbase they attract at regular performances at Brooklyn’s Barbés and other NYC music mainstays. For their Lincoln Center debut\, they’ll play songs from their first EP and introduce new cuts from their forthcoming LP.

SUMMARY:Electric Root Presents The Sound of (Black) Music
DESCRIPTION:Gospel\, funk\, soul\, and Afrobeat come together in this joyful presentation of Rodgers and Hammerstein songs as viewed through a utopian\, afrofuturistic lens. The Sound of (Black) Music is a vibrant one-act concert reimagining of the classic musical\, featuring songs such as “Do-Re-Mi\,” “Edelweiss\,” and “Climb Ev’ry Mountain\,” all recast through a Black Roots music kaleidoscope. Created for 20 musicians and vocalists curated by Michael Mwenso and Jono Gasparro\, in association with Electric Root\, co-directed by Shariffa Ali and Kamilah Long with arrangements by Mathis Picard and music direction by Charenee Wade\, the concert channels the singular musical gifts of some of today’s most talented Black musicians into an overflowing celebration of Black Roots music. DESCRIPTION:This Disability Pride Month\, join us for a poetry reading facilitated by Joselia Hughes featuring poets Kay Ulanday Barrett\, Dan Schapiro\, and Jackie Torres\, and in conjunction with the thirty-third anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Hughes framed this poetry reading with this invitation:  \n  \nLet’s be potent and clear: it is summer 2023\, the covid-19 pandemic rages\, neglect from the status quo proliferates\, many of our comrades have died\, many more of our communities are dying and becoming increasingly debilitated. It is July which means it is Disability Pride Month. In the face of unwavering violence\, Pride is a complicating energy to hold. It is neither just the appreciation of progress nor an acknowledgement of one’s efforts. Pride is a collective rally into the necessity of and our presence to dignity—in living\, in death\, in sorrow\, in celebration. The dignity of ourselves as individuals within a network of many. The dignity of our breathing. The dignity of our struggle. The dignity of our being here now\, our being there then\, our will to be again. In a small chorus\, Dan Schapiro\, Jackie Torres\, and Kay Ulanday Barrett will offer  up songs\, chants\, memories\, directives\, considerations\, dreams\, and much more on how we can continue our mission of dignified life for all of us.  \n  \nThis event will take place on Zoom and will be accompanied by an cozy in-person viewing in the Susan and John Hess Family Theater for folks who wish to convene in person. DESCRIPTION:Join us July 22 as we celebrate the history and contributions of people with disabilities to the botanical world—past and present—as we offer multi-sensory plant activities for all ages\, a live performance from Heidi Latsky Dance\, and tours. \n12–3 p.m.\, Vanishing Art Featuring Heidi Latsky Dance\, Performing ON DISPLAY\, this endurance performance attempts to end the stigma attached to difference by featuring many performers with disabilities. Heidi Latsky Dance is an NYC-based\, physically integrated company\, creating daring work with people with disabilities since 2006. \n\n12–3 p.m.\, Multi-Sensory Table\, Join us to explore plants and their products from the Garden’s collections through this tabletop multi-sensory experience.  \n\n2:30 p.m.\, ASL Magnificent Tree Tour\, What makes a tree notable? It could be its size\, bark\, uses\, or a variety of other features. Some of our trees have been here prior to the Garden’s formal establishment in 1891. This tour\, led by an NYBG Tour Guide accompanied by an American Sign Language interpreter\, gives visitors who are deaf an enhanced experience. \n\nThroughout July; 10 a.m.–5:30 p.m.\, Children’s Sensory Experience\, Everett Children’s Adventure Garden\, Explore our sensory-friendly Peacock and Vulture sculptures in the Children’s Garden in celebration of Ebony G. Patterson’s art\, created with sambals and feather dusters for hands-on interaction. Then visit the Greenhouse for a quiet space to see plants and use spray bottles to help with watering.
