SUMMARY:Lincoln Center Presents: The Ocean Etched in the Forest
DESCRIPTION:Lincoln Center presents a major work from the Pulitzer Prize-winning composer and performer Du Yun. Born in China and currently based in New York City\, Du Yun’s insatiable curiosity finds new voice in The Ocean Etched in the Forest (刻在森林的海). Over the past several years\, Du Yun and her collaborator Julian Crouch have worked closely with Jino artists from Yunnan province\, including He Guiying\, the national inheritor of his people’s unique heritage. Living almost entirely isolated from urban society until 1979\, the Jino people have maintained their distinct culture and ecologically grounded mindset amid rampant modernization. In collaboration with Du Yun and Crouch\, Guiying has been recording Jino children from Bapiao Village as they perform nearly forgotten local folk songs. These recordings\, merged with music from Du Yun’s band OK MISS and live theatrical elements\, form Ocean’s original musical tapestry for a concert that transcends time and geography. Join us for a work that highlights the intersections of ancient tradition and modern methodology\, folk tales and contemporary storytelling\, and generations living and gone. Both showings will feature open captioning. The 2pm showing is a Relaxed Performance. \nThis performance is commissioned by Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and the Beijing Music Festival. Directed by Ellenore Scott\, choreographer of the recent Broadway run of Lincoln Center Theater’s revival of Ragtime\, this presentation honors the original work’s groundbreaking impact while boldly reframing it for a contemporary audience. DESCRIPTION:Black Girl Magic Ball\, founded by Mahogany L. Browne\, Lincoln Center’s inaugural Poet-in-Residence\, is an annual celebration honoring Black women and their allies who uplift the community through creativity\, activism\, and innovation. Its mission is to create an intergenerational nexus of joy and recognition and to inspire young people to see the possibility and collective care reflected in those who dare to dream boldly. Matriarchs is dedicated to the ancestral and artistic wisdom of Black women who have shaped brilliant language\, artistic movement\, and trailblazing vision across generations. This ninth anniversary Black Girl Magic Ball presentation explores the “birthing areas” of identity—where wounds\, communities\, institutions\, thresholds\, uprisings\, bodies\, and archives converge to form a living legacy. Through poetry\, musical performance\, movement\, spoken word and video art\, Matriarchs holds up memory mirrors of resilience and imagination\, inviting audiences to witness history\, grief\, and wonder give rise to urgent art.

Facially disfigured in a childhood accident\, Violet dreams of a miraculous transformation through the power of faith. Convinced that a televangelist in Oklahoma can heal her\, she boards a Greyhound bus and starts the journey of a lifetime. Winner of the Drama Critics’ Circle Award\, Lucille Lortel Award for Best Musical\, and nominated for a Tony\, Violet features show-stopping anthems\, ranging from American roots to folk to gospel\, with a score from Tony-winning composer and Lincoln Center Visionary Artist Jeanine Tesori and book and lyrics by the acclaimed Brian Crawley. Deaf Broadway\, synonymous with authentically Deaf musical theater\, returns to Lincoln Center after their previous smash productions of RENT and Waitress: The Musical (pictured above). SUMMARY:Lincoln Center Presents: Meadow\, Wildflowers
DESCRIPTION:The New York Times called the American Modern Opera Company’s Summer for the City 2025 season “a milestone” both for the performers and for Lincoln Center. This spring\, AMOC* returns to Lincoln Center for a series of one-night-only presentations of new and foundational compositions. The March program spotlights a formidable chamber music collective constructed of AMOC* core ensemble members including violinist/violist Miranda Cuckson\, violinist Keir GoGwilt\, and cellist Coleman Itzkoff. Together\, they will play “Wildflowers\,” a new and intricate miniature duet for violins by Juri Seo\, and “Meadow\,” composer Linda Catlin Smith’s gently wandering\, gradually unfolding string trio. The program closes with a rendition of selected movements from “Limin’\,” the Canadian composer/pianist Stewart Goodyear’s suite for violin and keys that draws inspiration from American and Caribbean scenes and dances. “Limin'” will feature Cuckson and a special guest appearance from Goodyear on piano.
