The featured artworks offer sparks of inspiration\, while Intertwine Arts staff will be on hand for guidance and support. \nCombining performance\, installation\, and live social sculpture\, Weave In\, Weave Out is a major exhibition hosted by Positive Exposure of site-specific fiber work by contemporary disabled artists from Intertwine Arts. The title of the exhibition alludes to the spatial nature of the exhibition\, where visitors are encouraged to come and go within the space\, or drop in or out\, over the two-month duration that the gallery has become a live social sculpture\, or a socially engaged art practice. Intertwine Arts is a non-profit organization based in New York which brings free-form weaving to people of all ages with developmental\, mental and physical disabilities and chronic illness. The mission of Intertwine Arts is that weaving is for everyone\, and that fiber arts should be accessible\, which also ascribes to the principles of disability justice. The Disability Justice movement is a social justice movement developed in 2005 by the Disability Justice Collective that included Patty Berne\, Stacey Milbern and Leroy Moore. Many of the looms that artists from Intertwine Arts use have been designed with accessible modifications to meet the needs of crip time and the unique capacities that disabled embodiment brings. While the work of Intertwine Arts is not clinically-driven\, such as art therapy-based interventions\, there is a shared and mutual understanding of the holistic and generative benefits that weaving offers\, where it fosters creativity and independence\, increases feelings of self-worth and satisfaction\, and offers opportunities for unique expressions of memories\, lived experiences\, and the imagination. The organization facilitates art-weaving workshops with organizations that include AHRC\, Visions\, HeartShare\, IAHD and the YAI Without Walls program. \nThe exhibition is open for appointment where visitors can engage in learning how to weave at the loom while working alongside Intertwine artists in the gallery space. The exhibition is also accompanied by accessible features\, including live-streaming for those who wish to participate in weaving and observing virtually\, a dedicated webpage for audiences at home\, and performative image descriptions of works as weavings are made in-situ.

SUMMARY:Woven Together: An Event in Support of Intertwine Arts
DESCRIPTION:We’re excited to welcome you to a benefit in support of the extraordinary weavers from Intertwine Arts workshops. Our goal is to raise $30\,000 in support of our workshops and virtual weaving programs\, designed for people of all ages with disabilities or chronic illnesses. The evening will be one of community\, appreciation and celebration\, including: \n\nA fashion show of bespoke garments by talented textile artists\nAn exhibition and sale of fiber artwork from Intertwine Arts program participants\nA Silent Auction of exciting items\nThe presence of a variety of looms\, adapted for use by all abilities and available for guests to weave\nSpecial cocktails and hors d’oeuvres\nLive music\n\nAccessibility \nThe building is wheelchair accessible\, with a ramp leading to the entrance and an elevator to the gallery floor. You will enter at a door labeled 516\, and take the freight elevator to the 3rd floor with assistance from an elevator operator. The elevator will open just outside of the gallery space. DESCRIPTION:Join Intertwine Arts for a series of talks wherein we invite artists we admire to describe their textile influences. Each medley will involve sharing artwork as well as a discussion of the intersections and divergences of two artists and their craft and experiences. In this lunchtime series we’ll explore each artist’s creative process\, discuss how the two artists’ interweave\, and finally provide opportunity for discussion and questions. Register to receive a link to the Zoom meeting and a captioned recording of the program. \nSuggested Donation: $10 \n  \nAbout Amanda Martínez \nAmanda Martínez (b. 1988\, Greenville\, SC) completed her B.F.A. at Kansas City Art Institute. Recent solo exhibitions include “Labor”\, Pittsburgh\, PA (2023); “querencia”\, Hesse Flatow\, NY (2022) and “Architecture of Desire”\, as part of Aichi Triennale at Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art\, Nagoya\, Japan (2019). In 2020 she completed a public art commission at 125 Maiden Lane\, New York\, NY with Art In Buildings. Martínez has lately lectured as a visiting artist at University of Missouri\, School of Visual Arts\, George Washington University and Pratt Institute. In 2019 she curated “Objects of Desire” at Tiger Strikes Asteroid in Brooklyn\, NY and in 2021 contributed “Tamales as an open system” to the publication “You Stir the Pot: Recipes for Change” organized by Victoria Manganiello with support from Taiwan Craft Research Institute. She has work in the public collections of Francis J. Greenberger and Woodhull Hospital. Her first artist book “Lazos que unen” designed and hand bound by Sarah Smith and published by Stock Pile\, Brooklyn NY was released this year. Martínez has been awarded grants by the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation and the Autistic Women & Non-Binary Network along with past residencies in Wassaic\, NY\, Kansas City\, MO by the Charlotte Street Foundation and Truth or Consequences\, NM. \nRecent press for Martínez’s work includes Surface Magazine\, The New Yorker\, The New York Times and other outlets. Martínez is autistic and founded Autistic Artist Alliance in 2022\, an online community for autistic artists to challenge stereotypes and advocate for greater representation\, autonomy and dignity. The artist lives and works in Brooklyn\, NY. \nYou can see some of her amazing work by clicking here! \n  \nAbout Danaleah Schoenfuss \nDanaleah Schoenfuss is a lifelong crafter\, artist\, and arts worker\, who has explored a variety of mediums ranging from clay\, to wirework\, to weaving. Her work has been featured in two exhibitions\, including “Sensory Weaving” at Loop of the Loom and “Museum Workers Create” at the King Manor Museum. Her employment has ranged from The American Museum of Natural History to the New York Transit Museum to the Children’s Museum of Manhattan. Her work explores themes of playfulness\, subverting professionalism\, nostalgia\, neurodivergence\, and a strong DIY and found object sensibility.
