Petrie Fellow, Teen and Community Partnerships (Education Coordinator)

Under the direction of and working with the Teen and Community Partnerships lobe within the Department of Education, the fellow will receive training in how to develop a variety of studio arts programming for NYC audiences. Additionally the fellow will coordinate all administrative and day-to-day aspects of the MoMA Teens In the Making program from the application process through art show installation; coordinate MoMA’s Cross-Museum Collective, a collaborative behind-the-scenes program for teens created with staff at MoMA PS1; and assist with weekly duties associated with Open Art Space, a weekly drop-in program for LGBTQ teens and allies. Additionally, the fellow will receive experience assisting with the Museum’s Community Partnership program, which offers free collaborative arts experiences across a number of non-profit community-based organizations and their audiences. Other programs that the fellow will assist with include Night Studio, the Museum’s after-hours application-based program for young people currently in the process of getting their High School Equivalency degree.

Responsibilities:  

  • Participates in planning sessions with teaching artists and staff, engages with youth audiences across a number of hands-on projects and programs, documents and organizes seasonal art-making materials, and communicates with members of Groups and Tours, the Design Studio, Creative Team, and Security departments.
  • Executes all aspects of daily set-up and cleanup, staying through the end of each session and assisting teaching artists with any specific needs. 
  • Performs any other duties reasonably related to the functions described above.
  • : Requirements:  
    • Bachelor of arts or bachelor of fine arts degree with a background in studio arts, museum studies, or museum education.
    • Prior museum or arts education experience is preferred. 
    • Strong organization skills
    • Ability to successfully execute syllabus development, artist collaborations, on and off-site arts programming, and related administrative tasks.  
    • Ability to work collaboratively with educators, teaching artists, and other museum staff to create new ways for teen and community audiences to engage with modern and contemporary art. 
    • Must be comfortable across a variety of art-making materials and projects, and be able to supervise and run a variety of social media platforms. 
    • Must be capable of successfully working directly with teen participants, specifically in regards to the Cross-Museum Collective
    • Must enjoy art-making, multitasking, collaborating with, and supervising first-time museum visitors, and interacting with a wide-range of staff and audiences, particularly teens and young adults.
    • As the majority of these programs take place after-school, must be available to work evenings.
    This is a two-year grant funded position with potential extension to three years. Reports to: Assistant Director, Teen and Community Partnerships
