Founded in 1973 as Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, LMCC serves, connects, and makes space for artists and community. LMCC seeks a permanent full-time Director of Development. The Director of Development co-leads the Institutional Advancement department with the Director of Communications & Marketing and is a key member of LMCC’s senior staff. The Director of Development is responsible for raising approx. 98% of LMCC’s annual budget and oversees the planning and implementation of all development efforts. They serve as a main point of contact to LMCC’s Board of Directors and support leadership in all aspects of Board development. The Director of Development is also responsible for setting and managing long-term fundraising goals, including a current capital campaign, and identifying new strategies to support organizational stability and revenue growth.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Sets income strategy for each fiscal year and targets existing and new donor prospects, regularly tracking overall progress to staff leadership and the Board of Directors
  • Oversees approx. $6M in annual contributed income ($3.5M towards LMCC’s general operations, $1.5M in regranting funds, and $1M in in-kind support)
  • Works with leadership to identify and cultivate prospective new revenue sources for scalable growth
  • Oversees weekly income processing, donor acknowledgements, and maintenance of records database (Salesforce)
  • Oversees retention, maintenance, and management of past materials, including proposals and grant agreements
  • Works closely with leadership and the Board Chair to plan and execute Board meetings
  • Attend Board meetings (3 times a year) and provide reports on fundraising initiatives and progress
  • Works with leadership, the Board chair and the nominating committee to identify prospective Board members, and develop strategies to increase support and engagement amongst existing Board members
  • Supervises and supports Board committees – particularly executive, nominating, institutional advancement, and benefit – including setting annual activity goals and providing Board members with necessary materials and tools to accomplish such goals
  • Works with leadership, the Board Chair, and development staff to develop and implement a strategy for the Annual Board Appeal
  • Oversees the development assistant to support meeting scheduling and maintenance of Board files
  • Oversees a grants manager to track deadlines and develop proposals and reports for new and existing corporate, government, and foundation sources each fiscal year
  • Serves as a lead point of contact with new and existing institutional funders and oversees all communications and correspondence
  • In collaboration with Director of Communications & Marketing, develops corporate sponsorship pitch decks and implements appropriate sponsorship recognition benefits
  • Oversees strategy for engaging major donors in LMCC, reviews and develops existing individual giving program models: Producers Circle and Friends of LMCC
  • Oversees annual donor appeals and other donor engagement strategies
  • Works closely with the Director of Communications & Marketing to draft strategy for handling communications for stakeholder recognition events and fundraising appeals
  • Leads the conception, planning, and fundraising strategy for LMCC’s annual gala, The Downtown Dinner, ensuring achievement of fundraising goals
  • Supervises the development team in the execution of all public, fundraising, and donor cultivation events
  • Supervises project evaluation, event reporting, and donor/stakeholder acknowledgement
  • In collaboration with leadership and/or a campaign consultant, design and implement a comprehensive plan for a second phase of the capital campaign for The Arts Center at Governors Island, including developing a building reserve fund and other potential areas of support:
  • Ensures department operates within established financial guidelines
  • Ensures budget dollars are used responsibly and introduces innovative ways to reduce costs
  • Works with Board, leadership, and senior staff to strategize and integrate departmental activities into the organization’s strategic mission and monitors progress towards these goals
  • Assures appropriate staffing to support the development department
  • Promotes employee satisfaction and takes necessary action to maintain a productive and motivated staff
  • Works with others toward shared goals and communicates effectively and efficiently with all staff concerning relevant matters

Working Conditions: 

  • Maintains standard office hours. Attends evening, weekend, and early morning meetings and evening functions as required.
  • The Director of Development reports to President and supervises Grants Manager, Individual Giving & Special Events Manager, Development Assistant and Interns

  • Qualifications: Strong candidates for this position will have:

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Arts Administration, Nonprofit Management, or related fields
    • 5 years’ experience leading a development function in a supervisory role
    • Experience with Microsoft Office and Google Suite
    • Experience working with a fundraising database required, Salesforce experience a plus
    • Experience using Mailchimp, EventBrite, iWave and project-management tools such as Asana a plus
    • Demonstrated success cultivating relationships with donors and prospects, as well as soliciting gifts
    • Demonstrated skills and experience in designing and implementing successful strategies for seeking, obtaining, and stewarding major gifts from institutional and individual sources
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
    • Excellent writing skills with the ability to convey a clear, concise, persuasive message
    • Strong organizational skills and attentiveness to detail
    • Ability to multi-task and manage more than one project at a time
    • Eagerness to be an active participant in and meaningful contributor to LMCC’s ongoing work in equity, diversity, and inclusion and apply DEAI principles to scope of work.
